    Rusty Calipers...Painting Advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My calipers are kinda rusty and very ugly. Im want to paint them either black or silver (no red or yellow OEM). How would I go about for the prep to remove the rust and get the calipers into a good condition to paint.
Also is G2 caliper paint the best DIY

I can't give any advice on how to clean and prep your rotors, but i would suggest Dupli-Color for the paint. Works great and cheaper than G2.

to remove rust, i'd take the calipers off and soak them overnight in a tub full of mineral oil, then take steel wool to them.

    Here's my take on this...

As for cleaning, what I did because I was too lazy to completely remove the caliper, I bought the duplicolor caliper paint and a can of brake cleaner. (Kit comes with a can too). I bought the paint brush kind because its a little bit easier. I just sprayed the hell out of thecaliper with the brake cleaner and took a steel bristled brush and scrubbed the nuts off of the caliper. On a few tough spots, I took 320 grit sand paper and sanded it down till it was silver. Gave it a good spray down, dried it off and then taped up for painting.

Painting was really easy, I did 3-4 coats of paint per caliper. Its really easy just time consuming. Took me 7 hours or more to paint all 4 of them.

Yes, G2 is the best. I have had it on for over a year and its held up great. Best thing is the easy application. Just pick up some decent brushes from the crafts store. It goes on think and moves easily but coats fast.

I took my calipers off and sand blasted them. Make sure to cover the pistons and other parts if you do this. There is special tape to be used in a sand blaster.

    Here is some motivation.

Left one after sandblasting, look how clean.

sandblast, powdercoat. otherwise its a waste of time. paint chips and peels. powdercoat is very durable. if youre going to do something like brakes that sees a lot of temperature changes, humidity changes and sits outside, gets pelted by hot bits of brake pads and rocks, do powdercoat. do it once, do it right.

not everyone has a sandblaster, but im surely taking this route...but never thought about powder coating them.

whatever you do, just make sure the calipers are super clean before painting and have them cure for a period of time. That way its less likely to chip.
