Check out this silver carbon fiber trim set we’re working on…

Few more pics of the manufacturing process here.

It’s the first silver “carbon fiber” (which is actually aluminum coated fiberglass) trim set for a B8 we’ve done and it is turning out fantastic. The epoxy is all cured now and it will be trimmed down, sanded smooth, and clearcoated in the next week or so. I can’t wait to see how this looks installed in a black Audi interior.

Yea, I've widdled it down to the basic concepts. It isn't overly complicated, but there are a bunch of little things that really make a difference in how the quality comes out (minimizing bubbles, keeping the weave straight, and not distorting the weave around corners, for example) that I leave out for obvious reasons.

But if a caveman had the had a little bit of knowledge and the right materials, he could probably figure it out. ;)

I'm going to attempt the MMI and vent pieces in the next week or so, but I think I should be able to do it.

Price will not be cheap on any silver pieces we make, expect a $100-200 premium on any of the normal black carbon fiber part pricing.

A few people asked for better pictures of the pieces in natural light. It was really tough to get solid pictures that capture how they look in person. This was the best I could do:

I tried taking some in the shade, but the color was awful. It looks blue and tan because its reflecting off the sky and the side of the building:

Im guessing this is because the material itself is more costly or is it that the methods to fabricate are more difficult?

I have softboxes (my last "real job" was at a photography studio) but we didn't have room for anything until we moved into the new shop. Once I get more settled here, I'll get the mini studio up and running.

The material is cheaper (about half the cost of carbon fiber) but it is much more time consuming to make parts with it.

Is every glass fiber coated with aluminum or is it only applied to the surface like a film once the cloth is weaved? Is it a bi-ax or tri-ax material? It appears you vacuum formed the material dry and then wet out the laminate. Is it the aluminum that makes that possible? Is it difficult to wet out?

Sorry for all the questions, I am an ex-boatbuilder. Just curious. I 've dealt with a lot of different fibers and weights, but not this. I've only been out of the business 2 years.

Very nice work. Clean trim lines. Slick finish.

How many tries did it take before you figured out how to vacuum it down without distorting at the edges?

I'm not 100% sure, but I would assume it is coated after it is woven.

Neither. Bi/tri axial material is usually fiberglass and is stitched, not woven.

It is my amazing skill that makes it possible. ;)

I do it with normal black carbon fiber all the time, just takes a little bit of practice.

Quote Originally Posted by Countryboy View Post

Just a bit more time consuming than normal carbon fiber. Sometimes I have to sand it down and build up more epoxy around the edges.

Quote Originally Posted by Countryboy View Post

A while. I had to redo quite a few pieces because the bags were pulling off the aluminum coating, which made the pieces look pretty bad.

Thanks for correcting me on the bi/tri error. I should have asked if it was a 2 or 3 direction weave. I thought you said it was fiberglass in the beginning, not cf. Is it something else entirely?

    Thanks for sharing.

It is fiberglass (aluminum coated fiberglass), but its not matted like traditional fiberglass, it's woven like a carbon fiber.
