    little needed heatshield DIY day

so the past few weeks ive been suckin in hot air with my HOI (cone filter on maf...i only did it for the sound, so pls dont say the stock box is better, i know.) ive noticed my gas mileage dropped by about 80 miles to the tank also (have a small boost leak too though) so i went out at got materials to build a heatshield. stopped by home depot and picked up a 12x24" sheet of 28gauge steel (i thought it was aluminum, it cools faster..go with aluminum if you do this.) did some measurements in my engine bay drew some lines, and used some big ass cutters to cut the piece of metal into shape and came out with this:

i needed some type of heatshield material, and was striking out at home depot. 2 different stores didnt have anything that would suite my needs. so i called up a local parts place that deals with a lot of drag racing, and they had a 15footx1.5inch roll so i picked that up, wrapped the new heatshield in it, and installed it:

immediantly i noticed a huge difference in response/performance. which i was basically expecting, but it is great to suck cold are again. even with my stupid ko3

lastly, that is an AEM dryflow filter, its not dirty...it comes grey

no need to go to the firewall, it goes about 1" past where the strut tower starts and then theres that little flexable stock heatshiled against that. it actually was longer, but i had to cut it to fit it.

    O, I C what you mean.

Someone made ones that went all the way to the firewall and they looked damn good. He was selling them, but I don't know what happened with that.

Before and after logs? Do you have a FMIC?

I have the exact same setup (no heat shield) and it only gets maybe 10* above ambient under full load.

ya i have a racetec. i have no logs though...no vagcom and a broken laptop! i dont really believe its only getting 10* above ambient temp considering the heat coming off the turbo and exhaust is hundreds of degrees. maybe its cause your in canada and its colder? but i mean...cant be that much colder lol.

    Thanks

The turbo puts out massive amounts of heat. The modified air intake was right beside the turbo which made it a hot air intake instead of a cold air intake. Not very conducive to performance. The heat shield helps isolate the intake a little from the hot air around the turbo.

Ohhh okay thanks! So this is only effective with an after market cold air intake correct?

Correct. The OEM intake snorkel pulls cold air from the grille opening.

It's funny that people complain about the carbonio intake being useless. But yet this looks almost exactly like my carbonio does without the carbon cover on it. Except not nearly as nice.

I think I would like the heatshield to look a little nicer if I was putting it in my engine bay.
