remove the needle and put it higher..
usually if you doing yourself I recommend taking photos of the needle position before you remove them, this way at least you can match to your original ..

The way to calibrate these properly is to use vag-com "output test mode". It will put both needles at a certain position. I believe it puts them to 3k RPM and 100 KPH (62 MPH). Obviously you could care less if they are perfectly accurate at '0'. What you want is for the speedo/tach to be accurate within their normal operating range. The guys that rebuild clusters will hook them up and do this test before they put them back together so they get the needles set properly.

    Example:

What's the benefit of this? Just to get the S4 badge on your A4? Different fonts?

When I do mine I plug the cluster into the car with the needles removed, turn the key on and install the needles at the bottom stop or " 0 " . Or run the VCDS output test and set them that way. If you just lightly set the needles you CAN turn them CCW to get them right, then push them on fully.
So-- O.P; You just installed the white needles and S4 gauge faces on your A4 cluster? Doesn't it look kind of funny? The S4 back-lighting is WHITE as opposed to the A4's RED. So, when you do this doesn't it make the needles kind of a dim pink color? Also the cutout for the center display is just barely larger...so the screen doesn't look right (to me) this way.

I have the same car, same build month. Once you get the SKC to do the adaptation it should install just fine- there ARE a couple versions of the S4 cluster, but good odds it would install just fine.
P.S. I need ONE white fuel / temp gauge needle! One of mine broke..... so I'm running RED needles on an S4 cluster..which, isn't so bad I guess.

That is the most ridiculous reason for a mod I've read. All that effort for what? To keep the red DIS still (which sucks moose cock), grey face plates (which are meh) and face plates that say "S4" which from a badging standpoint is 'Poser'.

The colour DIS is what you want (my '02 has that and its fucking awesome). But then again what do I know? My views on mods to these cars are not really inline with the industry and general public.

you completely missed Doug's point. There's nothing wrong with upgrading your car functionally with S/RS etc parts.

This is so ridiculous. First of all the S4 cluster goes to 170 mph. Since the dial is symmetric your speed is now incorrect. You will actually be driving faster than your speedometer tells you. You have to mod the cluster eeprom for the needles to match the S4 readout. Following what everyone else has said the reason to get the S4 cluster is for the color DIS. So Doug's poser comment was spot on and it was meant to "sting". Swapping the S4 backing only is the equivalent to just slapping an S4 badge on the trunk. You are correct, you do not own an S4. I'm not saying you shouldn't swap on some parts but there are ways to do it without being tacky. What you have done here is tacky and frankly embarrassing. Good luck with the rest of your modding.

I agree what he did was a lot of work for not much payout BUT I also agree that the font on the S4 face is nicer than the stock faces; its a minor change and honestly I didn't notice the difference till I looked at both gauges side by side
