    Coilover Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought a used set of H&R street coils recently and went to get them installed at a garage I know for a discounted price. The mechanic gave me a call today and said it's going to take AT LEAST 8 hours to install so the rate he quoted me no longer applies.

Next he proceeded to talk me out of installing the suspension at all. He said that installing coilovers would result in me not ever being able to get a correct alignment in the front, and it would mess up a bunch of other shit because they are not to spec with the car and are not factory parts.

I think he tried to weasel his way out of doing the install because he did not see it as being profitable, and it takes a long time to install. But, I am also concerned about what he said regarding the alignment.

Could those that have gotten coilovers installed please pitch in and also what problems have you experienced? I am concerned about uneven tire wear as I've just purchased a new set of wheels.

    Thanks guys.

    Re: Coilover Question

Unless they are the wrong coilovers it sounds like a bunch of shit to me..... My tech charges 1.5 a side , so 6 hours and that includes an alignment. Thats at 45 an hour too guys.. Is he a certified Audi tech with a good alignment machine??

    Re: Coilover Question

They are the right coils. Part number 29363-2.

They are not Audi specialists, but they have experience lifting/dropping cars and they have a decent alignment machine AFAIK.

Also, earlier this morning they told me that they're "not sure if all the pieces are there" and to send them a parts list and instructions on how to install them that (supposedly) came with the coils.

I faxed him 22 pages worth of install from A4mods.com and later in the day I got the call telling me to reconsider putting them on...

Sounds like they don't know what they are doing and don't want to take a chance (which is smart on their part). If they asked you for install instructions, I'd be a little weary.

    Re: Coilover Question

I used to do it on jackstands in a gravel driveway and it took me 3-4 hours to do it. I would take it somewhere else it seems like their polite way of telling u they dont want to

    Re: Coilover Question

take that somewhere else looks like they are full of it. a good alignment can always compensate for the negative camber you'll get when you drop it low.

    Re: Coilover Question

What shop did you talk to? I had mine done by a local guy but there a couple place that do Audis that I would recommend.

As already stated, I'd say if the shop isn't confident I wouldn't be either.

    Re: Coilover Question

Looks like everyone already weighed in w/the right kind of suggestion....I would find another place to get them installed. It does seem like this is the shops way of saying that they don't want to install the kit...

It's Mister Muffler on Carling. Where would you recommend to have it done that's cheaper than Tapp (he's asking 5h@$79+align+tax)?

As for everyone else, thanks I appreciate the suggestions - I will take it elsewhere.

    Re: Coilover Question

Tapp actually was one of the ones I was going to say and based on your labour rate, better than the other. I'd say for this area, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to take care of you Audi.

RJ Motors for example would be closer to $100/hr, but are negotiable with cash dealings.

...and you don't want someone at Mister Muffler to do it if they don't sound confident because chances are your are going to pay later for getting something fixed.

    Re: Coilover Question

8 hours? I would say the install norm is from 2-4 hours max. Considering the tech knows what he's doing.
