DIY: B5 Any - Comfort Signal Mod (3 Blinks)

Alright, it's a fairly straight forward thing here. If you want to have the 3 Blink signal feature that the newer cars have (quickly activating the signal via the stalk and releasing will make the signal blink 3 times more without you having to hold the signal and then self cancel) then this is the mod for you.

I used the OEM VW Retrofit kit that you can get from the dealer or other VW/Audi Aftermarket stores.

    Part no: 000 998 229 A

I paid $51 CDN for this stuff directly from a local VW Dealer. Comes in a box with a relay, an adapter harness, and an instruction manual that really doesn't tell you a hell of a lot and doesn't help you one bit when it comes to installing this into a B5 Audi

Also I didn't take any pictures as I doubt they're needed. If you need a visual on how to take apart your center console then do a search, I personally don't think you need it. Once you get the radio out (you'll need the four special keys to do that) it should all become clear what you need to do (ie. remove a whole crap load of 8mm bolts). It was my first time taking it apart now and it was not hard at all. The whole install from start to finish shouldn't take more then 1 hour.

    Onwards...

    1. Remove center console (radio, climate controls, ashtray, armrest, hazzard surround/wood/aluminum, etc). Note you need to at the minimum take out all the screws for the armrest/E-brake portion to be able to slip off the center console bezzel/part of the dash.

    **AMENDMENT/OTHER OPTION**
It seems that you can pry out the Hazzard switch/relay and get at the wires/plug once you take the trim bezel off. I tried to do this on mine but it didn't wanna come out and I didn't want to break anything so I took the long way out and removed the center console. It's a little more work but doesn't really take that much longer. On top of that you'd probably have to 'fish' up the retrofit relay wires up or else you won't be able to get it behind the switch.

    2. Remove radio cage, as this holds the buttons on top (and cupholder) in as well.

    3. Unplug cable from back of Hazzard/Flashers button.

Now note, on my car this was the following pinouts/colours for that (Hazzards) plug (should be the same for all A/S4's):

    1 - No wire
    2 - Black/Green (thick wire)
    3 - Black/White with Green Dots
    4 - Grey/Blue
    5 - White/Black (thick wire)
    6 - White/Black (thin wire)
    7 - Black/Green (thin wire)
    8 - Blue/Purple
    9 - Brown (ground)
    10 - Red/Yellow

Now the OEM retrofit kit is for MK4 Golf/Jetta & B5 Passats, the problem with this is they have different plug ends, so we'll be turning the "plug and play" kit into a wire in kit.

Simply cut off the connector end of the relay harness. There are 5 wires coming from the relay as follows:

    Black/White
    White/Green
    White
    Green
    Brown

These wires need to be spliced into the factory Hazzard switch harness. I choose to solder my wires in by removing some of the insulation a little further back from the plug and then just taping it up with some good 3M electrical tape, but you can make whatever connections you like. Just remember you're not terminating any connections! You're simply splicing into the original harness.

I would advise against using "wire taps" like this:

As I've found them to be very unreliable (I would rather just twist wires together instead but that's just me), but do/use what you wish.

Here is the following pin outs on the Hazzard switch plug which need to be tapped into and to which retrofit relay wire:

That's it! Make sure all your connections are secure and covered, then plug the Hazzard plug back into the Hazzard switch and reassemble your center console reverse of what you did to take it apart.

You now have the feature from all the newer generation cars

Just got home, and I'm LOVING this feature... One of the best bang for buck mods IMO.

I had no idea there was an OEM module for this... I bought a "B3 Komfort blink modul" a few years ago for my A4, it was $70 I think? One of my favorite modifications, I use it all the time! Highly recommended. In fact I might get one for the passat now...
