Do I win the Cam Follower carnage prize?

Long story short, was replacing my valve cover gasket and noticed some small pieces of metal in one of the oil channels on the cylinder head. I assumed it was debris from a prior cam follower failure being as my car was running fine. When I pulled the HPFP to see if the cam had been damaged at all, what I found blew my mind.

Some pics of the carnage, how could this not throw a code or cause any other issues??

The HPFP with the end worn completely off:

Inside the HPFP port, obviously the cam is destroyed.

This is at the front passenger side of the cylinder head, on the exhaust cam. Looks like marking from debris:

And the cam follower that barely even resembles a cam follower!

What looks like sand is actually metal debris that was everywhere, this was from inside a port on the PCV valve itself.

And hate to see this happen to my baby...

Here's the debris I removed from the cylinder head with a screwdriver bit for size reference:

    Just did mine

Did mine today. Just bought this 06 2.0T 2 weeks ago so assume the follower is the original. Here's what I pulled out. Put a new one in but was too lazy to turn the motor to see the cam lobe. You think it was OK based on this wear?

FAQ: Official Thread for your Cam Follower(s).

Well, finally went at the cam follower, for the first time....took a lot longer than I expected. Ran into some problems...you deffinately need a short 17mm wrench...I ended up cutting mine in half with the angle-grinder after an hour trying to get to it. Such a piece of mind to have it done...not so bad after you do it once I think (hope) Thank you to @Biged243 for all your input and help!!! This is what mine looked like ...have no maintenance records on the car and it is now at 142,000 :(

    Mine at 95k :-(

Indy shop said the lobe looked ok, though I am still within the warranty, so maybe I should be getting the HPFP and camshaft replaced, I'll check with them I guess.

Did the car drive fine or make any sounds before you changed the cam follower?

141k. Bought my car with very little maintenance history because ibis. avant. 6mt.
Didnt get a picture of the cam lobe, but they said it looks worn. Along with a new cam, installing new JHM fuel pump internals, rear cam chain tensioner, all new gaskets, and the rear coolant flange. Oh, and a JHM HFC to boot!

Well my car is in the shop as we speak. I'm currently on 6th page of this thread but I'm getting a sinking feeling. I bought the car used a couple months ago at 139K KMs. I don't drive the car much probably 5KMs a day and in the last month I've been feeling hesitation when I was on the highway. I just ran into the thread about usual issues on 2.0T and saw the cam, HPFP, follower info. I've been having really bad fuel cut at WOT for the past week, like passing cars on the highway is impossible now. I don't have check engine but I brought it in to my mechanic so he could look at the follower as well as do an oil change. I will update the thread once I hear the damage but this thread makes me anxious lol. Funny thing is that as far as I've ever known we change our oil in Canada every 5K KMs or 3 months which is like slightly over 3K miles. So when I saw ref to 5K and 10K miles between oil changes i'm just like lol

Holy crap, my HPFP end is not as bad as yours but replaced the cam follower today, 164k miles on the original, I can only assume from the previous owner. Completely worn through. Surprised the HPFP was still working. New one in, all good now.

I’m curious to how often the cam follower should be replaced/inspected. I had mine done at 100k at 120k now. When I had it done I had them installed the updated camshaft along with new HP pump.

I think it depends on a couple of things like how much you drive the car, how far. The cost of the follower is so small though for the damage it does and the cost to repair. I usually change mine every other oil change. I do my oil changes every 5K KMs or 3 months whichever comes first. I also drive my car very little. 5KMs a day Mon-Fri.

This was a while back it ended up being a set of spark plugs. I had all the symptoms of cam follower failure but my dad couldn’t check it for another week. I called the dealership and it was a royal clusterckuf. They said the cam follower was covered and booked me in. I get there and they tell me that it’s only xx amount of years it’s not covered. I had to go in late to work, my car is already parked and if it was the cam follower I didn’t want to wait a week to find out. So I left it for them to check. They ended up calling to say it wasn’t the cam follower it was a set of spark plugs which they already put in and charged me almost $300! My dad put in a new cam follower the following week. The old one was worn but far from punched through and the cam and HPFP were good.

Time to revise this thread! After about 2 hours of work getting the darn pump off I inspected the cam follow on a B7 2.0T Quattro with 140k miles. It's all shiny on top but not worn or concave. Since I just bought the car I have no idea if the follower was ever replaced. So assuming the follower isn't the issue causing the P0087 code what else could be causing the random acceleration lag? According to the extensive service history on this car, the fuel filter was replaced at 107K miles. I guess I could replace the fuel pressure sensor next. Any thoughts?

I'm about to do mine. I have the 8m triple square banjo bolt model. Has anyone come up with any tricks by now or everyone still going up with an extension? Was the fuel pump with the banjo bolt one of the things that changed with engine code? I'm still trying to figure mine out.

I’ve seen some folks come at that banjo bolt from underneath with a looong extension. Luckily I had the hose clamp style. Although the clamp was turned 90 degrees so it was a PITA to unclamp it.

If I ever have to do it again I’m not going to hesitate to start taking intake and pcv parts off to get to the bolts. Wasting time trying to contort my hand/body to get at a bolt is not my idea of a good time.

I’ve owned both styles and absolutely prefer the banjo bolt. I might switch out the hard line to the banjo bolt style if I ever have to take off the intake manifold for something else.

About 10k miles on the worn one. I replace them every 2nd oil change. When bought the car, the old cam follower was completely busted and I would imagine it affects how fast it wears out now. Car has 183,500 miles PXL_20210918_211902002.MP.jpg
