Horrible noise on cold start up

Anyone have this on their 2.0T?

Ours sounds awful...rattly and rough. It happens when we start the car in the morning (or if it has been sitting for a few hours).

It's generally only when we put it in gear (R or D). It goes away after a minute or so.

(no TIP FTL jokes either!)

I callled the dealership this morning and was told (by the number one Audi service tech in North America) that this is 'normal' and that is something to do with the car and the catalytic converter. Something to do with heating it up and self diagnosing (clearly I'm clueless). It's only when in gear, and it's only for a minute...so he nailed the description dead on before I even described it. I just said 'when we do a cold start, we get a weird noise...' and he finished my sentence.

Anyone else? I'm taking the car in for regular service (Audicare FTW!) and will leave it their overnight so he can cold start it with me in the morning. He said we could also start another B8 2.0T that's on the lot so that he can show me the sound in another car.

I have a feeling ours is louder, because honestly it's borderline embarassing...I cringe at our neighbours making cracks about our 'new' car!

Did this just start or has it done it since you got it? I haven't heard anyone mention it yet.

ive had this happen to me ever since i put the 10w-30 oil in for the summer since it gets hot, it sounds like it's bogging for a sec or 2 and makes a funny noise like u mention, then when the motor heats up the revs drop below 1 like a normal car.
Only happens when the car hasn't been used for a while.

make sure you check all the fluids...

they missed topping up the power steering fluid one time and it wasn't till the car warmed up and the fluids expanded did it settle.

car is going for service, so hopefully they'll ensure all of the fluids are right.

I'm reasonably sure something minor is wrong...this can't be a normal noise. I couldn't imagine someone test driving the car on a cold start and hearing that and being filled with confidence!

mine does it for a few seconds at start up.. i was told that it was to send some extra fuel through the system to get the car lubed up for driving after it has been off for awhile.. it just didn't add up to me for some reason tho

I can tell you I'm getting this same thing. I've been thinking about taking it in to have them look at it for a while. It's an awful rattling noise on startup that goes away once the revs drop back below 1k. It seems like it takes 20-30 secs or so. I can't remember it ever not making the noise but there is a chance I just never noticed it before.

The one thing that may be different for me is it does it whether I'm in gear or not.

I've been delaying taking it in becuase it requires me to leave it sit overnight to replicate the issue for them. I'll be following this post to see what you find out. It might be normal or it may be that we all have the same issue. I'm going to get a youtube video sometime soon and post it up here to see how it compares. Maybe tomorrow morning.

yeah...sounds like 'oh fuck...we can't fix that for under $1000, so just tell them it's normal'

hahah yeah, seriously. I got my 15k service coming up, and my dealership has been awesome about being honest for once.. i actually have a repair rep that is a car guy, pretty rare haha. i'll see what he has to say.

In all seriousness, I haven't heard any such noises. How cold are we talking? My car has probably never seen sub 40 degree temperatures.

by 'cold start' I mean it hasn't been running for a while, thus isn't warmed up. Cars run in the 100-200 degree range when warmed up, but when they sit they cool way down.

FYI before the Canada jokes come out, cool here in June is 65 degrees. Today it is a high of around 80

i have it too...and the vibrations at highway speeds...and my freon was at 22 instead of 35...if its an a4 gremlin, i have 'em all!

so I met with John Kamp tonight at our Audi dealer.

He said he'd show me another cold car, start it up and see how the sound compares to mine.

EXACTLY THE SAME! I was pretty stunned. Something to do with the catalytic converter.

Guess it's normal.

really? thats so weird that its made to sound that way or what not, it doesnt soound good at all...my sexy car sounds like a POS for the first minute of use haha, i hear the exact same thing you have been talking about and ive gone like three times to the dealership and they said everything was dandy...who knows..

that's it...I'm parking it in the garage facing out, so I can blast out of there and off my street before my neighbours hear it and snicker.

Sorry for the lack of grammar, i am still a little groggy... just woke up.

i am pretty sure what you guys might be hearing is the secondary air intake audi's and vw have had these for years but it has never been as prominent, to me what i hear almost sounds like a jet, and a door closes and opens when you shift through the gears on a tip to drop rpms. IDK if this was what you are talking about... but maybe it is....
