Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

I was thinking about doing a custom 2.5" system sometime this winter (along w/ custom 2.5" dp's)... rather than use a X-pipe, has anyone used one of the crossover resonators i've seen on the magnaflow site (or summit site)? two pipes in, two out, but the x-over in the middle of the resonator.

just curious as i'll probably start sourcing parts in the next couple weeks (i'm dusting off the welding skills as we speak, lol)
    mods... yeah
if i'm not responding, i'm probably out training

    (2004 Audi A6 2.7T S-Line)

I found a couple videos to add to this thread:

    Stock:

    Click

    Straight pipe:

    Click

A mod. should make this a sticky no?

I am currently running open DP's to stock center res, then straight pipe back. It is not too loud at part throtlle, does drone. I am changing it out to a Y into 4" custom resonator, 4" single to the back, keeping the tip turned down. I will post pics when it is completed, add some sound clips as well

This will sound great. Single exhaust sounds so much better on our V6s than this true dual set up the A6 comes with. Though I loke the look of dual

I am making a custom set up similar to neuspeeds setup on the B6 3.0. Y after cats into single pipe to the back of the car, then another y to connect the mufflers.
    Sounds Mmm Mmm good.

I have an x pipe now, no secondary cats, no resonators, only Remus mufflers. I like the WOT sound up high in the rpm band, but theres some awfull rasp about 3k...

thanks! took some time before I could finally decide. And the magnaflow stock pics suck! so I wasn't exactly sure how they looked till I had them in my hands.

I think it will sound good, should be a deeper rumble. Also plan on doing it in aluminum for weight savings, titanium if I win the lotto this week

I just got back from my fabricators place, we decided on Y to 4" all aluminum, custom flow through 14" aluminum muffler. V banded at the Y, set up for future turbo set up. I am booked for march, but if he can, he'll squeeze me in earlier. Should be a significant weight savings

That's sound like a great setup Jeff, with the dual resonators and x pipe it should sound deep and mean. My current setup is raspy at 4k, but it looks like you would have eliminated that issue with this setup. Let's hear it, waiting for some sound clips

    2000 A6 4.2

    -Downpipes (gutted Y, N, or Both): N
    -Size of piping: 2.5"
    -Mid-muffler/resonator Y or N (brand & model): Y, stock
-Rear muffler (brand & model): Vibrant
-Tips (size, model, and brand): Vibrant straight tips
-Complete price (if you don't mind, and maybe where you bought the parts): $450 fabbed and installed at Innovative Tuning.
-Comments: I started off by having my tuner remove the rear mufflers. after about 2 weeks of hating the drone, I had him put on Vibrant mufflers. drone is still present, but not as bad as it was straight.
-Sound description (and clip if you have one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImoESEhboKg
    2000 A6 4.2 - 18x9.5 Raderwerks, 275/35s, Vibrant mufflers, H&R coilovers, 25mm spacers in rear - 15 mm in front, Pioneer P2300 in-dash.
    2002 911 turbo - custom "straight" exhaust, PSS10s, GT2 control arms, GT2 clutch/plate/slave, bigger DVs.
2007 STi shit box - too much to list.

What determines if you have the cutout in the rear valance for pipes? Did the cutout pieces come in a certain year or certain model?

So I have a C5 S6 Avant and I have a rattling, failing cat and I'm thinking of going the custom exhaust route and need some advice. I'm thinking of trying to find someone to do piggies with my stock DP's (maybe gut the pre-cats). I'd like to remove the main cats altogether since one is going bad already, but don't really want to deal with CEL's all the time. Has anyone tried the "J" pipe 02 sensor bungs to avoid CEL's? Would I be better off with high flow cats? Are the CEL's anything to be concerned with long-term when it comes to 02/Cat related codes and the effect they will have on the engine? What about an "X" Pipe? From the cats back, I'm thinking of removing the center resonator and keeping the stock mufflers for now till I can upgrade those later. I know it's a LOT of questions, but there is the long and the short of it. Bolt up set-ups for this car are just too rich for my blood at the moment and while I have a failing cat I thought it might be a good time to try something custom to get a few more horsies and maybe a more balsy sound effect. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated! I've tried searching and just haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. This 4.2 needs to be unleashed!!! Thanks a lot in advance guys... you're insights are always helpful and educational!!

Bummer on failing cat, but see no reason not to scrub emissions as I've often noted here; and 4.2 yields little in power with exchaust mods, so only issue is changing resonators/mufflers to change sound (beware of drone!).

Yeah, not too worried about the emissions either since where I live we have none, but my two main concerns with all of this are CEL's and the infamous "Drone" factor. Still looking for the right solution and hoping my local indie exhaust guy will have some ideas, but wanted to get some ideas of what Audi people have tried and been happy with performance/sounds-wise with the 4.2 engine.

no, that's exactly what Matt/Gumby is running w/ his Rotas and he is just running a 3mm spacer in the front to clear the brakes. I'm gonna put a 5mm spacer all the way around for a final offset of 15mm and 275/40's on all fours.
