well i have my custom set up with no resonators, and while i love the sound.. the drone is just terrible, makes me feel like i am driving my old ford probe. im looking for a cheap quick fix and i am considering using glasspacks as my resonators to quiet the tone a bit and get rid of my drone.. what do you guys think? and how long should i go? 12 inch 18 inch?

it still has the stock x pipe in there... the exhaust shop wanted to keep that as is, so everything from there back is straight through to the mufflers...

    Here's what I went with:

SSAC downpipes (chopped them off at the flex joint and had 3-bolt flanges installed with new pipe following the flanges), kept the SSAC resonators.
    2.5" piping which has a 6" x-pipe section
    Magnaflow 10426 18"x4"x4" round resonators
Magnaflow 12256 18"x5"x8" oval mufflers (offset in/center out)
    Magnaflow 35121 4"x2.25"x7" double-wall round w/ angle cut tips

The car is really really deep sounding. It is only loud at warmup since the SAI pump ramps up the sound levels. After warmup it's a deep rumble.

Part throttle is almost as quiet as the stock system. WOT is awesome but not a bright as the single muffler setups I've heard. As for drone, there's very little. There are a few areas in the rpm range that are a tad louder than others due to the resonant frequencies but, it's very uncommon during daily driving. The only item I want to try and change is the popping sounds at tip-in/tip-out.

I've been planning to take some pics and make a small video to showcase the sound for this thread. Just been too busy with H2Oi and work stuff.

Just an FYI, I thought that my car had an x-pipe on the stock system but, Dave (doobiesdaddy) cut his open and it was not an x-pipe. It was just two pipes attached at one point without an opening in between. Most likely for keeping the system rigid.

^ Very interesting. I thought that was an x pipe.

Anyway. I have gutted precats to an xpipe (i think this makes the difference) NO resiginators to Magnaflow Ovals.

It was a little loud when I picked it up but has sence mellowed out. There is absolutely no drone (keep in mind no res). I could actually go for a little louder becasue it only opens up when I really get on it, which is not often.

mine opens up and sounds great whenever i want, but the cruseing drone pisses me off lol.. and you can tell it is from the vibration inside the pipes underneath the middle of the car because when ur next to it you can hear the drone, when you go around back yo-u cant hear it.. i mean obviously the muffler noise is there but that is a slight rumble not a brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

this is topic that has been well discussed here -- not an x-pipe, but walls connected for support; many folks like the sound effects of x-pipe with their custom catbacks; does no harm, does no benefit for performance (in theory, you just want straight back) -- search for details

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

Ok, well Im thinking I want to do my own custom setup.

The Remus sounds nice, but its quiet ish and I want loud. Il keep the remus system, but I want to build up a custom loud really high flow setup.

    Remember I have a 2.8, so N/A.

Delete the secondary cats, x pipe, straight back from that. No mufflers. :D

I'm looking for more of the B5 2.8 sound. like this....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeJq6xc05RI

I think the problem with this is that the A6 is true duals, and the B5 has a y pipe.
So, if I cross the paths, think I can get this sound?

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

I was thinking about doing a custom 2.5" system sometime this winter (along w/ custom 2.5" dp's)... rather than use a X-pipe, has anyone used one of the crossover resonators i've seen on the magnaflow site (or summit site)? two pipes in, two out, but the x-over in the middle of the resonator.

just curious as i'll probably start sourcing parts in the next couple weeks (i'm dusting off the welding skills as we speak, lol)

I am currently running open DP's to stock center res, then straight pipe back. It is not too loud at part throtlle, does drone. I am changing it out to a Y into 4" custom resonator, 4" single to the back, keeping the tip turned down. I will post pics when it is completed, add some sound clips as well

thanks! took some time before I could finally decide. And the magnaflow stock pics suck! so I wasn't exactly sure how they looked till I had them in my hands.

    super happy with them though

This will sound great. Single exhaust sounds so much better on our V6s than this true dual set up the A6 comes with. Though I loke the look of dual

I am making a custom set up similar to neuspeeds setup on the B6 3.0. Y after cats into single pipe to the back of the car, then another y to connect the mufflers.
    Sounds Mmm Mmm good.

I have an x pipe now, no secondary cats, no resonators, only Remus mufflers. I like the WOT sound up high in the rpm band, but theres some awfull rasp about 3k...

I just got back from my fabricators place, we decided on Y to 4" all aluminum, custom flow through 14" aluminum muffler. V banded at the Y, set up for future turbo set up. I am booked for march, but if he can, he'll squeeze me in earlier. Should be a significant weight savings

That's sound like a great setup Jeff, with the dual resonators and x pipe it should sound deep and mean. My current setup is raspy at 4k, but it looks like you would have eliminated that issue with this setup. Let's hear it, waiting for some sound clips

yup it sounds great.. deep sounding no drone, good flow, can feel the power too.. im gonna do a vid when i get a chance, i don't have a fancy camera that capture the good quality sound, i'ma borrow my sisters cam, and planning to bring it to the open road i always go to..

so far i got the cheapest setup...lol.... and no worries on xpipe cause no mufflers... resonators acts as mufflers...i also got some mufflers with oval tips just in case i want to quiet her down a lil bit..

    2000 A6 4.2

    -Downpipes (gutted Y, N, or Both): N
    -Size of piping: 2.5"
    -Mid-muffler/resonator Y or N (brand & model): Y, stock
-Rear muffler (brand & model): Vibrant
-Tips (size, model, and brand): Vibrant straight tips
-Complete price (if you don't mind, and maybe where you bought the parts): $450 fabbed and installed at Innovative Tuning.
-Comments: I started off by having my tuner remove the rear mufflers. after about 2 weeks of hating the drone, I had him put on Vibrant mufflers. drone is still present, but not as bad as it was straight.
-Sound description (and clip if you have one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImoESEhboKg
    2000 A6 4.2 - 18x9.5 Raderwerks, 275/35s, Vibrant mufflers, H&R coilovers, 25mm spacers in rear - 15 mm in front, Pioneer P2300 in-dash.
    2002 911 turbo - custom "straight" exhaust, PSS10s, GT2 control arms, GT2 clutch/plate/slave, bigger DVs.
2007 STi shit box - too much to list.

What determines if you have the cutout in the rear valance for pipes? Did the cutout pieces come in a certain year or certain model?

So I have a C5 S6 Avant and I have a rattling, failing cat and I'm thinking of going the custom exhaust route and need some advice. I'm thinking of trying to find someone to do piggies with my stock DP's (maybe gut the pre-cats). I'd like to remove the main cats altogether since one is going bad already, but don't really want to deal with CEL's all the time. Has anyone tried the "J" pipe 02 sensor bungs to avoid CEL's? Would I be better off with high flow cats? Are the CEL's anything to be concerned with long-term when it comes to 02/Cat related codes and the effect they will have on the engine? What about an "X" Pipe? From the cats back, I'm thinking of removing the center resonator and keeping the stock mufflers for now till I can upgrade those later. I know it's a LOT of questions, but there is the long and the short of it. Bolt up set-ups for this car are just too rich for my blood at the moment and while I have a failing cat I thought it might be a good time to try something custom to get a few more horsies and maybe a more balsy sound effect. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated! I've tried searching and just haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. This 4.2 needs to be unleashed!!! Thanks a lot in advance guys... you're insights are always helpful and educational!!
