    Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

so i was having my car checked at a shop for a coolant leak and they said that a bunch of hoses and valves need to be replaced. so i have been doing some research and found info on some of these things. they gave me the P/Ns below as a "bare minimum" i should change out, but recommended i replace the whole breather system. i was changing my valve cover gasket and got a look at a couple of these, they had gotten oil on them from the leaky valve cover gasket and i was told this caused corrosion in some of the hoses. i found this diagram http://forums.audiworld.com/picture....ctureid=190539 and read through the DIY on vacuum lines and check valves , but it doesnt list all the components (need name/P/N), plus i think its for a different engine. i think these things i can probably replace myself and save several hundred dollars they wanted to do (around 220 for the parts and 300+ for labor).

basically what i want to know, would damage to these hoses/valves affect performance of my car. it appears that the crankcase bleeder valve needs to be replaced per the list of P/Ns, although i havent seen it with my own eyes. can someone please post a bentley image of the crankcase hose system with the component names and P/N's, it would be a tremendous help to me trying to work through this. thanks in advance.

Register and login to www.vagcat.com, for a diagram of the vacuum/crankcase ventilation system with part numbers.

Faulty hoses will effect performance and drivability depending on the severity and location of the faulty parts.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

thanks diagnosticator, that helps a lot. i have one other question, the part numbers i got from my mechanic (an audi indy shop that i trust) dont match the P/N's from the diagram on the vagcat website. it appears they differ mainly in the version of the part number, ie 06A-103-245-F/C for the bleeder valve from my mechanic and 035103245A for the bleeder valve on the diagram. the parts are pretty different and am not sure which one to go with. i guess i need to get a look at the part in my engine before i make a decision.

Be sure you are using the right parts list, by VIN split etc. It's not always obvious but carefully examine the diagram title to make sure it's the right parts for your A4. I checked the parts list for your '04 and the bleeder valve PN I get is 035 103 245G the evidence that the 06A is superceded to the 245G, is that the '03 uses the 06B 103 245 that is a later PN in sequence compared to the 06A.

good catch, i had selected the wrong model. thank you. my engine bay looks more like the diagram you linked to. i will compare the parts and see what is appropriate.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

yup, read through that thread as well, it helped. i think the vagcat website will be exactly what i need to tackle this. what im wondering is if i should replace all the parts or just the ones the indy shop told me about. once i get home from work ill try to get in there and take a look at some of the parts to see how messed up they are.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

I had my bleeder valve replaced coz it was causing a loud noise when the engine was not venting properly (after driving hard or long distances). Part number was 035 103 245 A, and it takes about 5 min to replace. I checked all the valves on my car one by one, it does not take long to do so, just the one-time clips are a PITA (replaced them with the screw clamps). The only part thats a real PITA is the breather valve which goes to the crankcase (near the oil filter area), and am almost positive you have to remove the intake mani to get there. I also heard you have to be careful removing it coz some broken pieces might drop inside. There is a recall on that on my 2002.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

so the breather hose (2) attached to the oil filter housing (1) is disconnected from the valve housing (5)

are there any problems this would be causing, i have not gotten any indications from driving that there were any problems. i am not sure how long this hose has been disconnected. the area is too tight for me to just squeeze my hand back in there and connect it back up. im probably going to have to take the intake manifold off.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

Yes, it's a major problem effecting the entire function of the crankcase ventilation system, and will prevent correct function of that and probably cause some deterioration of running quality and increase fuel consumption, and increase emissions from the engine crankcase fumes.

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

    /sigh

so im fidgeting around with the hoses, try to see if i can squeeze my hand in there and connect the hoses are see if there is anything wrong with them. it seems that the hose coming from the oil filter housing is missing a chunk where the two hoses come together, i tried pushing the hoses together. the hoses arent secured together but they are sort of connected. its too tight for me to get my hand back in there and get something around them to secure them, so they will have to stay like that until i can get them fixed. they will probably come apart pretty quickly.

so i decide to give my car a run after pushing the hoses together to see if i can notice any changes, i get in and crank it and now im getting a high pitched humming from the back seat. around 2-3 weeks ago i changed the fuel filter, im at 41k and i bought the car used so i wasnt sure if it had been done. according to the audi dealer it had all its regular maintenance up to the 30k point, i bought the car at 34k. i dont know why i would be getting a humming from the fuel pump, i wasnt getting one before i changed the filter and had not noticed one in the last couple weeks. i have put probably 400-500 miles on since i changed the filter. not sure what to do with this. damnit.

they say problems come in threes, im waiting for the third, hoping its not big

    Re: Question about crankcase/pcv hoses/parts

All those crankcase hoses got a redesign at some point. They changed the way the hose clips on and the new design is a vast improvement over the old one. I'm not sure if the durability of the hose is any better though. The old ones tend to crack very easily after a couple of years.
