    034Motorsport - 1.8T High-Flow Catalytic Converter Testing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After seeing quite a few posts and remarks saying that there is no benefit to a high-flow cat over the stock one, we decided to do some back-to-back testing on a car that we were tuning in-house.

We verified the functionality of the stock catalytic converter, to ensure that it wasn't clogged, rattling, or had its flow obstructed in any way.

Here are the results of the stock catalytic converter vs. our 034Motorsport High-Flow Catalytic Converter (HFC):

The tuning was left unchanged between the two runs.

This vehicle passes smog with the 034Motorsport HFC, and there is no nasty hydrocarbon buildup on the back of the car from the exhaust.

The results speak for themselves, and prove that a 034Motorsport HFC is a great alternative to a test pipe for those who want to pass smog, save the planet, seduce hippie/environmentalist chicks, etc.

    034Motorsport B5/B6 1.8T HFC Results:

    - 400 RPM quicker spool
    - 14.5 HP / 35 ft-lb Gain @ Peak
    - Peak Horsepower Gain of 31.99 HP
    - Peak Torque Gain of 35.29 lb-ft

    Thanks Don!

We'd like to test this cat out on a stock turbo car soon, maybe we can find a local to help us with that.

I might even consider tossing one on a certain 421WHP 3071R plaything.

What I would like to see is a comparison between those two AND a true testpipe. If the results are good enough I might save myself the emissions hassle and get a hi-flow. Just sayin...

i got a test pipe myself, hopefully after seeing the new results i'll invest in one as well. plus the non hydro carbon buildup in the back of the exhaust seems pretty neat, and the whole emissions thing lol

Exactly. I never cared about the smell so much on my old Brilliant Black B5, and the black soot caused by it wasn't visible, hehe.

On my Ibis White B7, the black deposits all over the back from test-pipes got annoying rather quickly. I commute ~80 miles a day between work, home, and school. With no cats I was washing the car 2 or more times a week.

I second the need for a Test pipe VS HFC comparison.

I want to know how much power and spool im going to loose with a HFC vs my 3" test pipe.

    Keep up the good work!

    Re: 034Motorsport - 1.8T High-Flow Catalytic Converter Testing

I would love to see this comparison on a chipped k03, since it obviously flows a lot less than a GTRS and (probably) wont see as huge gains. I'm changing out my turbo to a new (used) k03 next week so that'd be prime time for a hfc... hmmmmm....

    Thanks for real data though!

    Re: 034Motorsport - 1.8T High-Flow Catalytic Converter Testing

We now have stock turbo data!

Many thanks to AudiRob for taking time out of his day to stop by for the install; I hope he's enjoying the drive home.

These results surprised all of us; we were expecting 8-9 WHP / 10-15 WTQ gains. The car ended up making a ton more power everywhere!

These are the kind of gains we'd expect to see on a test-pipe, so I con't wait to do back-to-backs on a 034Motorsport Test Pipe vs. 034Motorsport HFC.

    Test Vehicle Info:
    - B6 Audi A4 1.8T
    - Unitronic Stage 1
    - Custom Exhaust
    - Stock Downpipe
    - Stock Airbox

    Stock Turbo Test Results:
    - 150-200 RPM Faster Spool
    - Gain in Peak WHP: 13.7 WHP
    - Gain in Peak Wheel Torque: 19.7 WTQ
    - Peak Gain in WHP: 15.9 WHP
    - Peak Gain in Wheel Torque: 26.7 WTQ

Hey now, it's not that bad... I just did it (twice, for testing) in my B7 with my left arm in a sling due to a sweet rotator cuff injury that I procured at the gym.

While this isn't relevant to HFC testing, it is useful info:

Stay away from the 140 pound dumbells when nobody over 100 pounds is around to spot you during incline presses...

Tore my ACL playing soccer before my senior year of high school playing soccer. No cool story behind that one, either... The club team I was with scrimmages a girls' team, and I stepped into a deceivingly large hole in the ground at full sprint.

Only leg exercise now is walking and cycling. I'm no longer man enough for squats.
