    Oil level sensor faulty?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am beginning to think my oil level sensor is faulty as it has been coming on quite frequently. If I check the dipstick immediately, there is no oil on the stick when the light comes on. If I let the car sit for 10 mins or so, the dipstick reads full. I know this is from the oil draining back out of the guides, tensioners etc so I have to believe the dipstick is right.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Umm.... you should be able to see oil on your dipstick if you run your car to operating temp, shut it off, and immediately pull the dipstick (after cleaning it off the first time, of course). You shouldn't have to wait 10 minutes to see oil on the dipstick.

what are you basing that statement off of though? For instance, I just went outside and checked and the oil level is even above full on the dipstick...

Just keep driving it and monitoring your oil level first thing before you drive the car. And make sure you're not confusing the oil pressure light for the oil MIN light.

Over filling your oil is one of the worst things that you can do to your car. If you are not sure on how much oil is in your car, drain and refill with 9.5 quarts.

Walker, you had 3/4 hash fill and you added another quart. You are now overfilled. you should only be fill to 1/2 hash and that's it. Never fill these cars to the top. They burn oil that way.

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

I guess this brings about the main point... when is the correct time to measure oil level? When all oil is flowed back into the pan?

I measure it in the morning before I start my car, and the oil has DEFINITELY drained into the pan.

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

This is still occuring and its bothering me. I may swap out the oil level sensor to see if that fixes it. For example, this morning I measured the oil and it is just to the top of "full" on the dipstick. Perfect level. I start my commute to work and in about 18 miles, the light comes on. Now I am just ignoring it but it is really getting to me. This has probably happened over the past 3 days now...

Superavant, your oil is overfilled. You are only supposed to fill halfway up the hash marks. The oil should never even reach the plastic tabs on the stick. You should drain your oil and refill with the correct amount.

Halfway is recommended but its not overfilled... Its just below the top plastic tab which, according to the manual, is in the safe zone.

Oil expands when hot too, so full when cold will definately mean overfilled when warm.

... just your spelling, punctuation, and grammar. JK

I don't understand what you're saying, maybe you mean the oil was 3/4 between the two pieces of plastic?

Isn't oil always hot right after you pull over?

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

Same issue today under sprinted driving. Oil level light came on so i pulled over and checked the level. It was about 1/2 on the dip stick. Turned the car off and then on. After that the light went off.

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

When its hot and after a long drive is not the best time to check it.... These cars have consumption issues its known, audi claims its normal which its totally not. If it continues have them do a consumption test on the motor. All my problems went away after that was done....

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

    A) WAAAAAAAAAAY to many vague statements floating around in this thread.

    B) Check your oil at the end of the day, on a flat and level surface, 15-20 minutes after shutting the motor off.

    C) Check it every fill up to give yourself a good idea of fluctuations which may occur.

    D) Don't listen to ANYONE about oil consumption. If you measure oil levels frequently and consistently, you will know what is going on!

Every motor has different consumption levels, if any at all. Have you looked at your valve cover gaskets lately? Can you all tell me what grade was last put in (let alone, how many of you changed the oil personally), let alone what oil manufacturer, let alone what torque your oil filter cover needs for proper fitment?

The point I am making is this: If you are proactive and aware of your individual motor oil demands, then there is no need to get your panties in a bunch. Ipso Facto.......if in doubt, have an engine oil analysis performed and let us know the outcome.

FWIW, yes, oil level sensors suck in our cars, but if you follow the above points, you shouldn't be concerned.

    Re: Oil level sensor faulty?

I'm bringing this thread back since I have a pertinent issue to the topics discussed.

Two days ago I changed my oil, and I believe I may have slightly overfilled it. I used LubroMoly 5w-40. Now whenever I start my car I get a bit of white smoke out the exhaust, and the dipstick is reading on the top orange tab. Basically I'm curious as to what damage this could potentially cause to the motor?
You represent the idiocy of today.
