P0089 Fuel Pressure Regulator - Performance

This code is stored in my ecu and the cel is on. My question is, who else has taken their car in for this? My car only has 20k miles on it, so it better not be a cam issue.

if you get this code, that means you can get your cam checked.

The Audi Techical Service bulletin states that if this code pops up, you're entitled to having it checked and replaced it necessary. PM me your email if you want to see the pdf.

Please forward pdf. This is the second time. 1st dealer changed Fuel Unit in tank low psi sensor in June 2011 ($780.00) Labor was $430.00 of that. They state they don't recognize the p0089 code or the 7E8 & 7Ec codes. They use a diffirent fault code reader. Now car is stallining again and wont start. Ran code with a MAC code reader and getting same code. Last time they said it wasnt the Cam follower.

Second time with code p0089. First time the dealer replaced low psi sensor and CN fuel unit. Worked for 5 months and here we go again. The problem I have is they don't accept or recognize the p0089 fault code. The dealer insists there codes are different becuase they use Audi fualt code software. Can anyone provide additional information. I hate to say it but I don't trust my dealer. I've got 80,000 miles on the car and I had 78,000 when they did the work.

I had that code. Took the car in to the dealer and they replaced the low fuel pressure sensor. No cam check though, as I was not having any performance issues. This was done at around 35k before the car was chipped and before I was aware that this cam follower problem could even occur.

Do you know if they did the calibration???? I never knew there was one for almost 2 years that I have delt with the P310B code.... Try the calibration if it has not been done yet.... It has to be done with the car idleing....

I had a HFC installed a month ago and last monday I had APR Stage 2 installed, not sure if it is related or not.

My car has 32k miles, but I'm afraid to go to the dealer and have my warranty voided because of the mods.

From the sounds of it, it might be your CAT as when its bad and it heats up it essentially expands and clogging itself where as when its cold it contracts letting some gas pass by..... Know what I mean..... At least thats what I was led to believe from years ago....

Earlier this week (Wednesday) as Iput the car back into Stock mode, I got the CEL again so I drove instead to my mechanic who hooked up the code reader and sure enough -- P0089. He cleared it and as he did the first time around said I should watch it and if it comes back again, bring it to the dealer and since they fixed it the first time they will have to fix it again.

Like the first time this happened, the CEL returned after 24 hours, on the following day. I put the car back into APR93 mode and drove it with the CEL.

Today being my day off, Idecided to go to the dealer and see what he can do about it, so before even starting the car, I put the car back into Stock mode. Started the car -- no CEL. Happy WTF!

I still took it to the dealer and they claimed they could look into the history in the ECU and see what happened. I said fine, and that I would wait for it. Besides, they could also take that opportunity to fix my outside temperature sensor issue.

After about 2.5 hour they said the car was done (and it was also washed and 27-point inspected) and that they (a) replaced the outside temp sensor -- different issue, and (b) they 'recalibrated the ECU' so that this won't happen again. They never replaced the LP sensor again as far as I can tell. This is how the invoice read --



Any thoughts what they are getting at?

Good news is -- I put the car back into APR93 and still no CEL (just in case that triggered it last Wednesday and cleared it this morning!).

Warranty is up Monday, but I figure -- it was in their shop twice now for the same issue, they will have to keep fixing it if it keeps coming back.

Yeah mine came on intermittently for a period of 3 days, and hasnt come back on since. Im not sure whats going on, but they wont touch the car until I can get it in stock mode, with the cel to the dealership and not have the cel turn itself off.

I cant be certain... but this seems to occur mostly on a full tank... we will see after tonight though. I will run the car hard and see what comes of it.

In my case the tank was down to 1/4 left. My mechanic suggested that it was not a good idea to let these cars get down much past half. While I trust what he says, I think that any manufacturer that makes a car that has issues with less than 1/2 or even less than 1/4 tank of gas does not deserve my money -- regardless of how nice the car is. My rule of thumb -- fill up at 1/4 tank.

CEL turns off after several drive cycles with no spirited driving.
CEL remains on in stock mode.

No performance issues and no real fuel cut to report, would just like to know why I can't go out and do a bout of Gymkhana without throwing a cel for the next 3 days.

Hmmmm ... Gymkhana, eh? Haven't heard that word in a long while, and certainly not in the US.

Define this spirited driving. How long / many miles did it last? Maybe I can try the same and see if I get the CEL.

When I got mine the first time, there was no spirited driving involved -- just my usual driving where the revs mainly stay below 2000 rpm all the while. The second time I got the CEL, I was not driving at all, but just switching to stock mode before leaving the office. Could be a coincidence, I guess, but I had driven it normally to the office that day.

It will also replicate on occasion after driving for maybe 20 mintues or so, and then doing a hard pull on the highway on ramp, or again pushing the car toward the upper power band.

Seeing as how it just kinda goes off, im wondering if the part is faulty or if this is just part of the design of the fueling system?

Okay I would have to find a good area to do this. My typical haunts are all full of traffic and at those revs I could get into trouble PDQ. Doing the hard pull after 20 minutes of regular driving should be easier to accomplish on my way to / from work.

I would hate to think that a CEL is part of any design of any car, let alone an Audi. Has to be a faulty part.

So today I go an fill the car up (was down to 1/4 tank) and after I put the cap back on, turned it through more than 360 degrees (just to be sure) started and drive off ... blasted CEL came back on.

There was no CEL before fill up and all was OK. Started the car and no CEL. Reset my Computer2 for mpg, mph and distance -- no CEL with car running. Pulled out of the gas station and onto the road, driving easy -- CEL comes on.

I am getting very tired of this. Have no clue what the code is this time but I would not be surprised if it was P0089. It is like I cannot trust this car to be code free.

I will just leave it alone for a few days and see if it goes off by itself .... again.

My wife wants a 2010 Prius .... we'll see how pissed off I get with this CEL until then.

dear god dont get a prius, the amount of hazardous waste in those batteries is equivalent to 5 cars lifecycles. They arent a solution, they just dont let you see the damage to the environment they do.

I am now out of warranty so the pump likely won't be replaced unless I pay. They already changed the LP regulator and that solved the problem for a couple months. I don't drive hard so I am baffled as to why it keeps doing this. If I was hacking the car all the time then I would probably lean towards it being the cam follower issue that many people talk about here. But the car drives fine.

Mine is in APR93 mode now, as it was this afternoon when I filled up. Maybe I should try changing modes and see if that clears it. it seemed to do it last time (2 weeks ago) because the CEL was there when I shut the car off for the night and then the next morning I changed mode to stock (before starting the car) and when it started up there was no CEL. That time it was P0089.

Im giving this ongoing issue a bump with some new knowledge

Diagnostic trouble code P0089 - The ECM commands the Bosch high-pressure fuel pump to deliver a specific fuel rail pressure - that can vary up to 23,000 psi depending on load and speed. The actual pressure is monitored via the fuel rail pressure sensor. If the fuel rail pressure varies more than desired or if commanded fuel pump flow is 100mm3/second or less, DTC P0089 will set.

Corrective action includes measuring the fuel rail pressure using a Tech II scan tool, then compare that to commanded fuel rail pressure with the engine running at 2000 rpm. The difference must be less than 20 Mpa.

A blockage in the fuel tank or plugged fuel filter could cause this fault (excessive vacuum in fuel line). If there is less than 5 in Hg of vacuum when measured at the fuel pressure test port at 3000 rpm, the fuel pressure regulator could be defective, and may need to be replaced. The fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is a sub assembly located on the Bosch high-pressure fuel pump.

My dealership will not replace a part unless the cel is on. So im about to wire that light up to a battery to make it stay the !@%$ on.

But it could be as simple as changing the fuel filter.

Bump. Any resolution to this? Just got this same code today. My first thought was maybe cam follower or diverter valve (which I ordered from ECS last week, and will replace anyways), but according to this thread it could be the pump (HP? Or low?) or the fuel filter?

Fuel filter would be nice, since it's cheap and was on my list of "preventive maintenance" anyways.

I was told by an Audi service person that that code means that the other pressure reg inside of the HPFP is what the problem is... I have the same code on my car now for 2 months...... I was also told that yes the HPFP does need to be replaced but was ok to drive that it wont cause any damage but being the light is on i wont know if something else goes wrong that may be damaging to the car....

Im just waiting until i can get an APR rebuild....

With the p310b code he should have opened a technical assistant ticket on it but not a lot of places are doing this. His notes are semi right what they should say is he compared mvb 103 to mvb 106 and they were within range or compared them to an actual fuel guage. He probably didnt go any furthur into diag because it was a sporadic fault. Stop switching back and fourth from your flash and take it in next time it comes on, you wanna get that thing fixed before you go out of warrany. It could be the low pressure fuel pump or high pressure fuel pump and cam since its still coming back after they replaced the sensor.

Well I went ahead and ordered a fuel filter. Probably needed one anyways. I am going to replace that, diverter valve, and the cam follower (assuming the cam itself and HPFP are not toast) next weekend. I cleared the code yesterday and it hasn't come back on since. Car is running fine so we'll see what happens.

Not to dive into a seemingly dead thread but i just got this code (p0089) after WOT on an entrance ramp. i went to an auto parts store to get the code and cleared it. it said low pressure fuel regulator-performance. just wondering if any of you guys came to a conclusion about what it was? i hope to god its not my cam. i just replaced my follower about a month ago, and blew out my DV a couple weeks ago. im planning on ordering a new DV but what else should i take into consideration about this code? a fuel pressure regulator? fuel filter? any suggestions? i found on 034 that they sell a fuel pressure regulator for 50$. how easy is the install? any DIY tips?

I posted about this last year. Same problems. My audi dealer wouldnt even look at the cam loab and fuel pump until I took the pump off, took pictures of the tip, follower and cam.

When I showed up at the dealer with the pictures they replaced everything and I have not had another light or problem since a year ago.

When I got that code the dealer replaced the LP fule regulator and the problem was fixed.

Get it correctly diagnosed and get the part changed out. This is a common issue with these cars.

Doesn't that just mean they changed your fuel filter? I could be mistaken, but aren't they one unit?

Don't really know if they are integrated. The invoice said that it was actually the low fuel pressure sensor part# 06E-906-051-K. All I know is I did not pay for it and the problem went away.

i got this code yesterday on the rollingroad so until i get it fixed i cant get the custom tune finshed im getin fuel cut around 4500 5500
i know its not my HPFP cam or lobe all new
and for the min i dont wana change the lp fuel pump out till iv tried the lp fuel regulator

It's the pressure sensor on the HPFP its the one that is on top of the pump it can't be changed unless you get a new pump from what i was told from an Audi service man in Florida. i have the same exact code for the last year..... I have a spare pump but that is going to be rebuilt w/APR internals.

Ah, sensor. Well that is a totally different word. ;)

I know the filter itself has SOME sort of pressure and/or flow regulator. Guess it's different though.
