Since this thread doesn't seem to die, I'm gonna go ahead and share my attempt to battle this code. Story time...

I bought the car in December 2021. Code popped on for the first time in February 2022. I was going through fixing some of the issues the PO had neglected, and level setting the routine maintenance items, as this car didn't come with service records. PO had never mentioned this code popping up before, but to be fair, there were more than a couple things the PO failed to mention when selling me the car.

I already had a cam follower ordered and was waiting for it in the mail when the code popped up. After reading up on this thread and others, I also bought the fuel pressure sensor on the HPFP, and a fuel filter, planning on starting with the easier/cheaper items and working my way up.

When I replaced cam follower and the pressure sensor on HPFP, cam was not in correct orientation to get a look at it unfortunately, so that's still on the table. The cam follower I took out looked fine. PO said it had been done recently, and might have been telling the truth. Code was back within 48 hours after being cleared.

A couple days later, the OEM fuel filter arrived, and I threw that in. The code stayed away for two months! Here I was thinking I was one of the lucky ones. Nope.

I let the code sit there over the weekend while I continued to research this thread and others. I drove the car to work on Monday, and made it halfway there before realizing the CEL was gone! I immediately pulled out my code scanner and plugged it in to find the code still on the ECU. I cleared it, and finished driving to work. No more code... until Tuesday. It did the exact same thing. The CEL turned on for 24-48 hours. and then turns itself off, but still stays stored on the ECU. Rinse and repeat about 1-2 times a month. Every time it turns back on, I check it to make sure it'll be the same thing. The last time I checked it, I got a different error description, but the same code.

I struggle with blindly throwing parts at this issue trying to chase down a code that seems to be nearly impossible to get rid of. But at the same time, the car seems like it has fueling issues that should be addressed. It struggles to start sometimes, or will start and then almost immediately die. Once the car is running, it idles well, and doesn't feel like it's struggling to keep supplying fuel under hard pulls. I want the satisfaction of coming back to this thread with no code for an extended period of time. But only time will tell.

A4 Quattro, I'm just slightly ahead of you in parts replaced, hah. Don't throw parts blindly, I already did that for you and it's not working. I'm about to try installing an RS4 fuel rail valve. Old one appears to be original, I'm hoping that's what it is. My intake cam is a little scratched up in some places, but hoping that's not it. Everything else is new now. If you have VCDS, we should compare logs and see if our problem is the same or different symptoms.

Isn't that the VVT solenoid? How would that affect fuel pressure?

From the symptoms he was describing that’s exactly how mine was acting before replacing the VVT solenoid.

Did you have a p0089 code too? Its a rail pressure code.

    ok in theory ........

the car is looking for fuel pulses from the HPFP and if it doesnt see them when expected it flags a fuel pressure issue ...
if you have a failure of the VVT it can change the cam timing slightly so the pulses are not when the ecu is expecting them, they are shifted as the intake cam has been shifted by a failing VVT.

This is more prevalent on the B8 series but its the same principle, when the timing chain stretches enough it puts the cam enough out of phase that it flags fuel pressure issues as the cam driving the HPFP out of time ....

not saying this is the cause of fuel pressure issues but it can be a factor not to be discounted.

Some other resources on this that were probably found somewhere on here Audizine at some point, but I don't remember anymore. I've had the code too long, hah.

Did you have any timing correlation, or advancement codes?

Hmm, interesting thought.. But wouldn't you have some sort of timing code, if its off far enough to cause this? Didn't realize the timing of the hpfp lobe was that important. I know some people change the lobes, so they would need to be EXACT when installing the new one.?

I know it's not the same animal but in the.b8 you can easily measure chain stretch .bad ones really stretched will throw a fuel pressure code but not timing until the chain actual jumps.
    Lol that's engineering for ya.
