Paging Wheel Ho's - How do you figure out lug nuts length in conjunction to spacers?

I guess I'm going to man up and put some spacers on. Despite the fact on how much i hate to. With the OEM Rs4's I loved the look too much of having the wheel sit completely flush with the fender. With the newly acquired wheels, it is clearly not the case. They sit pretty far in.

With my OEM RS4's it was 19x9 ET 29 all around running 225/35 in front, and 235/35 in the rears. Respectively converting this to compare with a 8.5 inch wide wheel (you'll see why i need to convert) basically makes my offset of the RS4's 23 all around. Since it is .5 inch wider which is 12mm. Divide in half you get 6mm sticking out. 29 - 6 = 23mm.

With my new wheels they are 19x8.5 ET 38 with 235/35 all around. So in conclusion after you do the math, and approximate to what offset I had, I'd need a 15mm spacer in the rear, and a 8mm in the front. Which brings my new wheel offset to 23 ET in the rear, and 30 ET in the front. Given the difference in width of the two wheels and the narrower tires in my previous setup. Please chime in if i did my math wrong.

Now heres my question, how do you calculate how long the lug bolts need to be? Just get 15mm and 10mm longer lug bolts? How many notches do I need to have the lugs in the hub to be safe? Running the OEM RS4's, I have about 5-6 rotations, while the RSGT's I only have about 3-4. Doesn't sound safe.

Here is some pictorial for comparison. Crappy Phone pic of RSGT's.

H&R spacers come with longer lug bolts.

But, 10mm longer bolts will be fine for both 8mm and 15mm spacers.

You need to have ATLEAST 15mm of thread contact into the hub.

If thats the case, I'm damn sure my OEM Rs4's, and my RSGT's don't meet that requirement. Heck, I don't even think my USP wheels did? Gotta check on this...Maybe I shouldn't be driving my car right now...Hmm.

Im riding around with (I believe) 12mm of thread contact.

After doing research some guy said he has been riding aorund with 10mm of contact for years with no problem....so i decided "fuck it" 12mm should be fine, haha

Edit* Just read that you have 3-4 turns of thread contact with the RS-GT's.....yea, I would definitely not drive around like that.

3 - 4 threads is probably still less then 10mm.

I would say that is around 4-5mm of thread contact......

I have 35mm offset on my front wheels with an 8mm spacer bringing the total offset to 27mm. I wish I could remember how long the bolts are I am using on the front, but IIRC I have about 9 turns of contact.

Re: Paging Wheel Ho's - How do you figure out lug nuts length in conjunction to space

Your math is correct in that there is a 6mm difference in offset from 9 to 8.5 width wheel, so I'm almost positive and 8 and 15mm spacer will get you the offsets you're looking for. I also agree 4 turns or less is not enough to drive around. I'd aim for 7 turns, but I'm not sure how that correlates to thread length in the hub.

Re: Paging Wheel Ho's - How do you figure out lug nuts length in conjunction to space

Ok, So I did some math. 4 turns roughly is about 6mm of contact. So in order to reach the 10 turns, I'd need 9mm's more of thread. W Ok not bad, so I should be getting 37mm lug bolts. Well, that is for not running spacers. So basically If I need 15mm in the rear, and 8 in the front, I'd need need to add that amount of mm which equates to 52mm in the rear and 45 mm in the front?! Damn thats a long lug bolt.

So basically without the spacers, these lug bolts will be useless, since it is wayyy too long...Hmm decisions decisions.

Also anyone know how much thread can actually fit in the hub?

    Thanks.

I want to say 25mm of thread contact before you hit the hub.

When I bought my wheels/spacers I went through all the same crap your going through now.....

Re: Paging Wheel Ho's - How do you figure out lug nuts length in conjunction to space

the easiest way to figure out what you need is this. Take a OEM wheel (spare should work) stick the lug through the hole. Measure the distance that sticks out. From there you stick the lug through the other wheel that you want to mount up and subtract the difference. that difference is how much longer you need the lug to be. if you want to add a 10mm spacer you add 10mm to the over all length.

cheap place to buy lugs. make sure your lug seat is correct.
