Drill sound comming from the air suspension after shutdown?

Every once in awile after I shut the car off the suspension makes a mechanial notice which sort of sounds like a drill. It sounds like its supposed to happen and it stops after a few seconds but I was just wondering what it does that for?

Maybe it's just your air cylinders leveling off?? I'd love to get an air ride set up for my car, the only thing that is stopping me is the dreaded air leak problem for aftermarket systems.

Does the sound come from the rear wheels? If so, its likely it the electronic parking brake cycling. Seems to do this after a certain number of locking the car.

Does it matter if I use it or not? Because I never use the e-brake.

I never use the e-brake either, but I have heard the sound.

Figured it was just a compressor for the air shock system.

Are the 04 and newer A8's like the old ones that use vacume to operate the door locks? I know my 98 has a pump in the trunk area that cycles from time to time to keep the door locks working. (Usually hear it after opening the trunk if the car has been sitting for a day or two.)

No, it doesn't matter if you use the e-brake or not. The cycling is something the A8 does periodically. I'm not certain, but i bellieve its a safty percaution to prevent the system from binding up for those that rarely use e-brake; but that's just a guess on my part.

The conclusion is that its normal for the e-brake to cycle. I believe it is decribed in the manual...

That noise comes from the rear compressors. It actually is leveling the car out. If you ever heard that noise again stick your fingers in the wheelgap of you rear tire and fender and you"ll feel the rear leveling.
