because these cars are not aimed at those who are trying to barely afford them, thus the gap between a superloaded S4 and a BASE model M3 is somewhat irrelevant. Buyers (like me) who want NAV, Bluetooth etc. are't going to cheap out and sacrifice all their 'i-wants' in order to barely afford the car. If torn between the two, they're going to just buck up and buy the loaded M3. If you don't care about that stuff, and price out the base B8 S4 at $49,000 vs. the $59,000 M3, those are two VERY different cars. The guy who wants the loaded S4 probably wants a similarly loaded M3, and that's about a $10,000 price gap too.
With all of this being said, the 'gap' we should be addressing isn't the price gap...it's the performance gap. That M3 is insane and KILLS the B7 S4, but I think once we see more on the new B8 S4 we'll see 1/4 mile and 0-60 numbers that are approaching B7 RS4 type numbers. I guess 0-60 4.7 and 1/4 at 13.0/one-0-something mph. This will give M3 buyers cause to pause...and consider a far superior interior, lower douchebag factor and higher functionality with Quattro. Tough sell, but I bet people will be thinking hard between the two.
