    blackout lights

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

this is my 2008 a4 2.0T quattro tip..
i currently have nothing done to it but i want to blackout the lights(both front and rear) and paint my emblems and grill flat-semi gloss black.

so my question is, when i get the blackout covers or whatever it is you put on to make the lights look black, should i get brighter bulbs or will the OEM ones sine through normally? and my second question is, do the entire housings need to be removed to blackout the lights? because i would also like to clear corner them

and i know i sound like a total N00B but whatever im 17 and this is my first car

    Re: blackout lights

don't black them out - it's going to be too much imo.

If you're going to do the tails, I'd get them painted with tinted clear. Any bodyshop can do that.

Or you can buy a tint film that goes over the rear tails.

If you must black out the front headlights, I'd take them apart, and paint the inside chrome black and then put them back together.

I'm guessing it will look good if you take your time.

Why not try going to a shop that does tint and see if they think they can tint your tails?

    Re: blackout lights

Here's a link to my project... I blacked out basically everything in the headlights. Obviously since you have halogens, you can't black out the housing around the bulb. It was a pretty great deal of work, but well worth it in my opinion.

I also used the links in post #6 of this thread for my DIY guides.

    Thumbs down Re: blackout lights

    Just some friendly advice...

With so many other great looking things you could do, why in the world would you choose to do the black-out thing. That's so 1990's, seriously - you'll wish you had not done it.

Here's a list of better options:
    1. APR Chip
    2. Door Blades
    3. Window Tint
    4. Exhaust
    5. Xenon Headlights
    6. DIY LED taillights
    7. APR Snub Mount
    8. Navigation (assuming you don't have it)
    9. Suspension (Coils or cup kit)
    10. Anything else but blacking out headlights and taillights.

    Re: blackout lights

was somewhat under the impression that I could get housing covers that were very dark and just take off the clear ones and put those on for the rear? also if Ido the clear corner mod my blinkers will blink white in the front?

Dude - you will obviously want to get reflector bulb to replace the current turn signal bulb if you to the cc mod.

and...I have never seen any housing covers that are very dark (ever).

Search the forums for what you are looking for - there are answers and DIY's for this stuff.

You'd be better off just getting the tint put on instead of covers. Also, your turn signals will blink white because it is a clear bulb underneath the amber cover. I have been meaning to find some smoked colored bulbs that blink amber because I don't think my turn signals blinking white are legal in Virginia...

lamin-x is what you want if youre going to go the way of the blacked out heads/tails. i have the darkest color on my tail lights and the lightest color on my headlights. personally i think it looks good if you apply it well. but just know, once you change one thing, its a slippery slope. i thought i was just going to put a catback exhaust on my car when i got it. now i have every bolt on possible. its a sickness.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you, Body kits and decals are how much of a mess you leave on the wall.

Wow, some of those bulbs are crazy... Will any of the 1156's work for our turn signals? I think I might go with these... http://autolumination.com/images/aut...mber_24_wm.jpg

    Re: blackout lights

get your tail lights tinted or use lamin-x that way if you get a ticket you can just take it off. If you get them painted you'll have to buy all new tail lights and its a pain.

    DO NOT PAINT YOUR TAILS!
I REPEAT..DO NOT PAINT YOUR TAILS!

Not worth it in any way since youll have to wet sand that paint off..
which could possibly F*uck up your lights indefinitely..
lamin-x is the way to go..

next..if youre just looking to do some quick modding..trying to get it to stand out [more than it already does] ..go for it..i noticed people are naming serious mods i.e. chips, exhaust, drop etc..but thats bread..

go with the easy mods and familiarize yourself with your car..
    go easy on your baby..

    HAPPY MODDING!

p.s. just my $0.02 by the way

Lamin-x is pretty easy to apply. Use a spray bottle and take your time. Lamin-x is defintely the way to go, because when you get sick of the blacked out look, you can just peel it off.
