intermittently not starting. All the lights on the dash come on normally, there is no clicking from the starter and the car does not attempt to turn over. when i run vag-com i dont get any codes. so what else could cause this? when the car does start, everything runs fine. after i attempt to start a few times it starts right up. When it doesnt start, the engine doesnt turn over and the starter makes no noise, also, no voltage is pulled from the battery (found this out with a volt meter) as if the car is not getting the signal to start.

Have you checked ECU, look for fault P0605, which is a ROM error, means ECU is fried. Could be starter, solenoid, although that's a bitch to change. Could be crank sensor, or some have suggested to me climate sensor, look at my B5 Puzzler thread to see what I changed when car wasn't starting. My situation was different because it always ran well, just hot starts were a pain. I've heard crank sensor, or climate for symptoms like yours. I changed both of those as I was diagnosing. It could also be clutch inhibitor switch, but that's a long shot, I would vag and look for codes for ECU. If you can swap out ECU's with someone see if that makes a difference. Good luck.
