could be a cv joint. when audi told me that my front left cv boot was torn they said it will be ok for a few months but it will start to make noise. for one month it made a constant squeel sound and now it just hums like i have big mud tires. i have yet to get the cv joint fixed

Re: is this my wheel bearing?

It definetly sounds like your rear wheal bearing. You can get the bearing for 50 bucks from ecs. The only deal is that you have to take the unit to Pepboys or something so they can press the bearing into the housing with 10,000 lbs force unless you are reeeeeaaaalllllyyyyy ripped.

It was almost 400 at the dealer and then you are supposed to get it aligned to. If you do it right tho then you wont need to.

almost guaranteed to be the wheel bearing. They go out all the time on our cars. I got mine on germanautoparts.com for about $60 shipped. you can expect to pay for about 2 hours labor if you get it done somewhere

Did both of my rear bearings last week. that is definantly your problom, i had the same drone your discribing. Dont go to carquest though, they charged me 80 bucks a bearing. looks like i got ripped off after reading this thread. You need a hydraulic press to put them in right aswell.

Re: is this my wheel bearing?

Yeah it's probably the bearing. When mine went it would hum and get louder with increased speed. If the bad bearing is on the right, the humming will get louder when you turn your steering wheel counter-clockwise and the car's weight shifts to the right and vice-versa. Once you determine it's in the right or left. Drive to 35-40 MPH and hit the brakes. If the humming gets louder it's in the front, if it quiets down it's in the rear.

Also, don't forget when doing the brake test that the humming will get quieter because the car is slowing down. You should be able to tell out of common sense.

Re: is this my wheel bearing?

When my wheel bearing started to go, it sounded way worse than it actually was. I could have gone a lot longer before replacing it. I just got tired of hearing the noise.

I retrospect, it's really easy to change out. The only non-common tool you'll need is a 14mm allen. Just pull the rear spindle, and bring it to a machine shop to press the new bearing in.
You can do it for under $100, even when buying real Audi parts.
