Brushed Rings & Grille Surrounds

I decided that I wanted to try something other than plasti-dip on my grille surrounds. NvrFllw had used some sandpaper on his rings which gave them a nice brushed look instead of that blingin' chrome. So, I decided to try that on the rest of the chrome on the grilles.

I just took off the grilles exactly how the plasti-dip tutorial stated, and I even washed them with some dish soap because they were disgusting. I tried 600 grit first, but it didn't do anything, so I went with 400 grit. I even did the quattro badge.



Now it matches the brushed strip along the rear bumper.

very very nice. i want to go with brushed mirror covers, it looks like this would compliment them nicely.

did you literally have to run the paper in the same direction with each stroke to achieve the brushed look? like, a linear sanding pattern rather than a circular?

i was thinking about trying something similar with scuff pads, thinking that would be easier to control the brushed look with?

I've been toying with this idea for a while. I think it would match the lip on my wheels and when I get brushed mirror covers really well.

As far as the sanding strokes, I didn't really have a set strategy. I tried to stick to one direction, but it's tough when dealing with little crevices. I suppose if you stuck your face within a few inches of the rings you could see differences in the strokes, but otherwise it all looks the same.

Looking good. I brushed the chrome trim around my grilles, and it looked nice, but after a while I went back to black and plasti dipped my grille frames.

Is there any fear of going to deep and hitting crappy opaque white plastic?

Also should you clear coat it?

Sam just sand them until the shine is gone. Use very light sandpaper it will seem like nothing is happening but you will notice the chrome finish gone. If you use light sandpaper you would have to really sand hard to get down to shit plastic. I was really rough on mine and i couldnt sand through them
