E-codes are they plug and play?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've got stock OEM HID d1s headlights in my car. I want to change them to e-codes of same set up. Are they usually plug and play or do I need to splice/re-wire them to my stock set up? Do I need to modify anything to make them fit??

not quite plug and play.... you need to pick up some new bulbs. Turn signals and city light bulbs. also you might have to play with the harness to make it reach the housing. I just made my own adapter to add a couple of inches.

I'm looking at Helix E-codes. I notice they label it as D1S HID housing. I already have D1S setup, why would I need new bulbs? turn signals weren't mentioned so...which ones would I need?

Re: E-codes are they plug and play?

Ya for your car they will be plug and play.. Also you should know that the city light itself wont turn on, unless you VAG your car to canada mode.. Dont worry things will still be in MPH and F the only thing will be that your citylights along with your fogs will be on.. Also your interior lights will be always on and when you open your door and the car is on you will get that killer BEEEEEEPPPP. You can get around that by wiring those citylights to a feature that turns on when the key is on... aka fuse tap...

Before installing them into your car though you will need turn bulbs because the E'code system uses a different type. Dont worry E-code turn bulbs are the generic turn bulbs all cars use, so it is E-wallet friendly.

I bought my e-codes about 2 months back and I love them! <they look sooo much better than stock clear cornered headlights

Which brand e-codes did you get? If I decide to not use the city lights, will I still have issues like you've mentioned?

Re: E-codes are they plug and play?

What you're getting are not OEM E-codes, but regardless you will get a bulb out error without the city lights.

Off the top of my head, on regular E-codes the city lights are W5W and the turn lights are PY21W, the easiest and cheapest place to find them is ironically at a Benz dealership. You might want to make sure that's what the Helix lights use.

Re: E-codes are they plug and play?

Ok so from what it sounds like e-codes require some wiring/fuse tapping, and VAG-com to make them work. I've misunderstood thinking that these would be direct swap, as in unplug headlight harness from old headlights, plug in new e-code headlights and you're good to go...If it seems that it requires more to get it to work, I'll probably not go with these e-codes and just stick with my OE set-up. Unless there are e-codes out there that are direct plug and play without the extra work that comes along with it...

Re: E-codes are they plug and play?

No, you don't need to modify anything or have to use a Vag-com.

I had xenons on my car, I unplugged them and plugged in a pair of bi-xenon e-codes and that's all there is to it if you have all the bulbs.

Really? Why am I getting mixed messages. (See above Frey 7190's reply). DO you have the Valeo e-codes?

Definitely. Re-read whay Frey posted, all that is optional and done after the fact. They're plug and play. Yes I have OEM valeo bi-xenon ecodes.

I get what he's saying though, since I'm in Canada I didn't have to change anything. I'm pretty sure that Americans shouldn't have to. The City light runs instead of the amber corner on regular NA headlights, I thought it was all in the wiring in the headlight.

i take it you are looking at the chrome helix ecodes and not the black ones? the chrome i assume are pretty much plug and play since they are labeled for d1s. just have to swap the bulbs and ballasts over. the black are only halogen, unless you do a bit of retrofitting.

Yes HELIX d1s HID e-codes. Do you have them too? Are they really plug and play without having to manipulate VAG or fuse tapping to make the city lights work??

Re: E-codes are they plug and play?

^no i have the black halogen housings which i spent 10 hours retrofitting my stock xenon projectors, bulbs and ballasts into. i also had to cut the harness from my stock lights and splice it onto the ebay lights.

you shouldnt need vagcom anyway. and if there is a slot in the headlight already for citylights than you dont need to worry. if you plan on drilling one then you will need to rewire it. if you have auto leveling lights you will need to pull the fuse to keep the warning from coming on the dash.

So if I have auto-leveling and I buy these Helix D1S ecodes, my auto-leveling will no longer work? Is there a way I can make it work or I'm just gonna have to pull the fuse?

"Pull the fuse?" wouldn't that actually kick the warning light on?? Or what do you mean by that?

No, he's right. The auto-levelling function as well as the warning light are gone when you remove the fuse.

IMO it'd be better to just spend the extra $ for oem e-codes, perfect fit finish and function and no need to butcher up anything.

I guess in your case, you had the stock HID d1s set up, right? Then you replaced them with the Helix black e-codes that was meant for stock halogen...explains the reason why you had to retrofit. But I'm talking about the Helix chrome ones that are meant for stock D1S HID set up. I'm guessing this chrome ones would be more close to plug and play in that case...
