    PLEASE HELP!!! tiptronic/limp mode situation

So today on the way home from work my car(2002 a4 quatro tip) started to act weird. I made a right turn off the highway and i noticed that the gear selector square that should have been over D for drive disapeared! So i said thats weird and kept driving but it would seem like the car wouldnt shift gears and acted like i was in sport mode. So after driving alittle more and coming to a stop light the car then stalled!!! So i pulled over to the side of the road and tried to re-start it. The car then quickly started right up but it then had all the drive modes on the center display covered in red like they were all selected? Being like 7 miles from home i took it easy and drove it but it seemed like it was stuck in a higher gear especialy for starting from a stop. I made it home ok but immediately turned it off.
So i did some research on here but it said this happens from going into limp mode! What would have caused my limp mode situation like this to happen?
After the car sat for a few hours i then started it and let it idle for a bit while selecting throught the drives and it wouldnt do it again at all? Another thing that was realy weird is my thermostate took a shit a few weeks ago and my car would never get to operating temps at all, but today after the limp mode shit it actualy warmed up and stayed warm for the hour it was idleing and i was driving backwards and forth in the driveway????
I want to take it out and drive it but im afraid its going to break down on me and i also need to get to work!!!

Im very sorry for the book i wrote but i wanted to be as clear as possible!
thanks and i hope too hear some good advice!

Yeah some posts on here say that. But others say a limp mode will cause this situation. Like I said i started it last night and let it warm up completely. Then i drive it forward and backwards in my driveway. I then took it around the block a few times and it didnt do it at all
