    Push Button Start?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I got bored very easily so I decided I would start a new project. I want to install a push button start in my car. First question, has anyone done this before in the A4? What is involved, is it reasonably possible, and what would the difficulty level of this be?
    Thanks

    Re: Push Button Start?

Well I just looked this up.
It seems simple enough on a Honda. hehe
So I would need both an ignition switch and a momentary push button starter. Hmm what if my friends decided to be a dumbass and pushed the button while the engine was already running? Would it still turn the starter? From what I've heard that's very bad

    Re: Push Button Start?

Actually another way I just thought about is to jus put the keys into the ignition, turn them to the run position and have a momentary push button that is wired to power and ground and have it run to the starter. that seems like the most practical way.

    Re: Push Button Start?

The most practical way would be to turn your key all the way. Don't do stuff to your car just for the sake of having something done. You will regret it in the long run. Not to mention you will get flamed like hell in the short run.

    Re: Push Button Start?

I did it in my car because I took my car apart.

The Honda S2000 button is something like $100 in Canada and the Audi push to start switch is something like $400... LOL.

Needless to say I bought an el cheapo switch and it works fine.

i think it is only cool if you have keyless go or something like that. i don't see the point of it if you still have to put the key in. are you trying to impress the ladies?

    Re: Push Button Start?

I'm just going to do it for pure show and looks. I'm going to do it the easy way, just power the switch and run it to the starter, so you have to turn the key to the run position then pres the button. I think it will be relatively simple. I'm going to go look for a good place to put the button. I'm getting the S2000 button for $15

    Re: Push Button Start?

youre going to need the key no matter what because of the immobilizer chip and steering wheel lock.

that thread with the rs4 button looks pretty good though

Okay I decided I'm going to try andd it the right way,... like this...

I will be doing lots of research tonight, and if anyone has a wiring diagram of the ignition please post.
    Thanks
I will keep everyone posted on my progress.
In the mean time could you'll brainstorm abut where I should have the two switches, one master on off switch for ignition and etc. and the other button for the starter. was thinking mount ontop of the ash tray panel, or in the ash tray.

    Re: Push Button Start?

that will make your car ridiculously easy to steal, and you'll have to disable the steering wheel lock aswell....

+ our cars have an immobilizer chip which will probably make it a bitch to work around

chip inside of the car that talks to the chip inside your key when you put it in the ignition so that the car is allowed to start up without thinking that it is being jacked

    Re: Push Button Start?

I don't really have an opinion either way on this one, but something I don't get is why everyone his giving this guy so much flack about doing something (at least somewhat) functional, yet everyone is on board with putting non-functional shark fin antennas on their cars. I just don't get it.

I understand the security implications here or even the reprecussions of F'n up the starter, ignition, etc.

    that's how you learn :D
Agreed. I would, however, do a fairly extensive amount of research before starting this project.

    Re: Push Button Start?

There is no way around not using a key to start this car.

If he is still going to use the key to start the car then he is fine. The push to start can be done and it is only a "cool" factor.

If on the other hand he wants to eliminate the key completely then he needs to get the immobilizer disabled by someone that knows how to do it.

    Re: Push Button Start?

immobilizer can be taken care of by APR or UNI, maybe Revo, but not GIAC.

    others can do it aswell

    Re: Push Button Start?

I love the push button, but only if I can leave my key in my pocket all the time. In my brothers 3 series he has to put the key in the ignition before he pushed the start button. BMW makes the "comfort access" keyless entry and keyless start a $500 option.

A few people have done it in the UK - both B6's and 8P's. Here's a write up from the 8P, all I could find:-

    Re: Push Button Start?

Well, if you're really ambitious (and daring), you could dismantle the key fob and the ignition switch assembly, mount the immobilizer chip capsule near the reader coil, and rewire the accessory, ignition, and starter to switches. Then you can do a keyless "airplane-like" startup... master, fuel, ignition, crank 'er up!

The issue of course would be security... anyone could jump in and drive off without a key. Maybe wire in a keypad security system... enter a PIN, hit the button, and VROOM! Or use a bank of switches where certain ones have to be on and certain ones off in order for the car to start. Eight of them would be 256 combinations, which would slow down a joyrider. Make it so the starter button works with the wrong combinations, so they have to crank the engine to see if it'll start. The repeated crank attempts might get someone's attention.
