    MAF went out again...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my MAF went out again, in a month... (a week after I could return it... lovely..)

Its driving OK, not as bad as before, Its definately noticable, but its throwing codes.

There is no way it got that dirty that quick, I've been driving very normal and I have not cleaned my KNN air filter since my turbo change, so it shouldnt be over oiled (I've been oiling KNN's for 5 years, Less is more. I know)

Do I just have 2 bad MAF's or could there be another problem?

    Re: MAF went out again...

Do you still have the stock airbox? And it is not just the oil that gets onto the MAF. But any debris that gets past the fibers of the filter will end up sticking to the oil on the MAF (so, you will have oil+debris on your MAF).

Log the MAF in block 003 to check if the MAF is good or not.

Why not just run a paper filter? K&N filters suck. I bet a paper filter will out-perform a dry K&N.

Depends on the MAF and MAF housing combo. Some people see as high as 200 g/s with a TT225 housing.

AZ is full of helpfull people and if you post in the classified I am sure someone will be willing to assist in logging your MAF. If you were nearby to me, I would let you use my VAG com. You may want to also look into the Amsoil direct fitment air filters for our stock airboxes. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspx

To eurotecknik, I would assume so. But I am no expert. Maybe GetBoosted84 can confirm?

    Re: MAF went out again...

It is not the filter that is the problem. Something is causing the maf sensor to blow out and a bad/loose wire tends to be the problem. Also have to figure in that his stage 3 is always pushing the maf sensor to its limits and this too will cause a maf to go bad.

Well that might be tuff seeing that APR rescalled the readings from the maf, so you really cant just throw a larger maf housing in there.

First place I would start checking is the maf harness.

Mike, I assume checking the harness for tears or breaks of some sort? I did that quickly when I first got the code, I didnt notice anything with my naked eye. Do I need to check things with an OHM meter or something?

Is there a stronger MAF than the factory one that is still 2 7/8"? Doubt it..

Like Mike said check the harness, I had the same problem and thought I had a bad MAF according to the codes I pulled. Replaced the MAF and still had the same problems, car ran but was sputtering. Someone on here suggested that I check the harness and they were right, 1 of the 4 wires in the connector was barely hanging on and was not giving a good signal. Replaced the wire and the car was good to go, hopefully your problem is the wire and not a bad MAF again.

    Re: MAF went out again...

I have the biggest and best heat shield. MAF never gets over ambient temp.

Im going to check the internal connections on the MAF and clean the MAF to see if that was the issue. If so I'll clean my air filter as it's been a while.

I bought my last MAF used, but it looked in perfect condition... Maybe I just need to buy a new one and be done with it.

So, buying a new one... Does the one for the later years work?

    Example
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...1%7C240%3A1318

Or do I need to go with this

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...1%7C240%3A1318

    Anyone used this knock off?

Yes, Im cheap. Especially if im just going to blow it out in another 3 months.

"MAF input sensor low/ out of range"
Comes back on every time I clear it. (I dont have VAG, just a code checker)

Same stumbling issues last time I replaced my MAF.

I was getting some misfire issues back when I was running the stage III kit that eventually got traced back to the MAF. After numerous spark plugs and coil packs, I finally purchased a brand new older style AEB MAF ($$$) and problem solved.

just a quick question. That ebay listing claims that the maf will fit 96-99 VW jettas.. Does that mean that older style 1.8t AEB MAF sensors are the same as the 2.0l ABA MK3 jettas sensors?

    The plugs are identical

    Re: MAF went out again...

    New maf went in.

Seems to be 10x worse. I get a HUGE stumble, It seems like ther is a 1/2 second lag and when I finally DID get it on full throttle (to see where it was at) it sounded like detonation.

Driving around is OK, better cruise and up to about 1/8 throttle, but there is a stumble still, and after that it seems to be just worse...

The new MAF has a completely different sensor (wires instead of a circuit board) Part number is correct though.

What do you guys think, MAF or other? The only other thing I did was clean my air filter and re-oil it.

Part number on the sensor or on the housing? Might be time to just buy a brand new maf from a Audi parts shop or the dealer. Who knows what you actually got in the car right now seeing that it is different then what you had before. If you have a vag you better do some logging because if the maf is not the correct one your load readings could be completely way off causing the ecu to run way too much adv timing.

Same # on the housing. there isnt a # on the sensor, right?

I dont have VAG, but I do have the cable for the ross tech. However I dont have a laptop :(.
