smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So driving home from work today the car starting blowing a ton of smoke out the exhaust. I thought maybe it was a turbo, but there isn't any excessive noise from them and the car was still making boost as i drove the last 3 blocks home and parked it. pulled the dipstick, it was low on oil, but not milky on the dipstick. There was some milky oil dripping out of the tailpipe though. I'll drain the oil and check the plugs and compression later tonight or tomorrow when its not -10 out. Car didn't seem to run any different just blowing a ton of smoke. Smoke was bluish oil smoke, although it did seem to have a hint of coolant smell. Coolant bottle wasn't low at all. Any ideas on what else it might be besides the turbos? Or maybe it is a turbo, they do have 68k on them. Maybe a head gasket was my other thought, but i would think I would notice the car running worse or an over heating condition, which i didn't do. Didn't get any other warning lights besides the O2 light thats on cause its cold out.

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

You sir have just blown your turbos the midwest way. It is not a headgasket. It is the seals in your turbos. Because of the cold the seals shrank and oil and coolant are seeping past into the exhaust. Your intercoolers are full of oil. You are fucked. I know because the exact same thing happened to me on a nice -15 degree day here in Wisconsin. Just another perk of the cold I guess. Good Luck!

I figure either way the motor's gotta come out, and if its out, might as well do the turbos and the timing belt which its due for anyhow. Had hoped to make it till summer before tearing the car apart though.

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

My turbos went in the exact same fashion, pull your lower intercooler hose, if it is filled with oil and coolant, and I do mean filled. Then kiss those snails goodbye. I blew mine at -30, not enough warm up time, and I punched it, then I saw nothing but a huge cloud of smoke and horrible smelly oil seeping from the tailpipes

Before jumping into the big stuff, take a look at this thread:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257274

This might simply be a frozen breather hose, since you did mention it was super cold outside. If the symptopms disappear when the car warms up, this is your answer. Happened to me numerous times.

mpower, thanks for the reminder about the frozen lines, this also happens to me all the time, althouigh the smoke is usually white, I am rarely low on oil afterwards and as you said it goes away.

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

Don't think this is a frozen breather line, it doesn't smoke at idle, I let it warm up till it was at operating temp, then took it for a drive, still blew smoke. I haven't had a chance to do anything more than that cause of my work schedule. Where's the cheapest place to get K04's?

I had this same problem and just replaced my turbos with k04's and its still doing it. I thought maybe it was just some residual but my car is burning oil. I don't if maybe I got screwed with some bad turbos or maybe there is something else causing this. I need help!! Any input??

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

I don't think it's a head gasket at least not with mine. But I'm experiencing some definate power loss. I think I got screwed on the k04's that I bought. They better not try to screw with the warranty on them. They came with a six month warranty and worked for six seconds if thats what my problem is.

Could be your piston rings...get a compression test before you pull the motor to get at you turbo's. Good luck

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

Thanks. I'll check that. The only thing that gets me though is other than the smoke and the power loss the car runs smooth, no misfires or rough idle. I would think that if it was piston rings it would run pretty rough but I'm not sure. I'll definatley check it out though. Thanks for the info.

Re: smokey and milky oil dripping out the exhaust?

op go down to autozone and get a compression tester to make sure your head/head gasket are good
it would suck to pull your motor and replace the turbos just to have low compression on a cylinder

    re: Spider hose.

Anybody know where the DIY spider hose is at? Somebody told me there was a guy who made one himself and posted a DIY on how he did it. I cant find it anywhere though. I'd rather do that than pay $175 for some stupid vacuum line then find out thats not my problem.

Hey, I had alot of the same problems as you... I just pulled the spider hose off and found a huge gash at the main trunk, fixed and the car drives like a champ now, Give this one a shot, hopefully it's your problem because it was super easy.

Well I got it all figured out and one the turbos I just bought brand new are blown. WTF!! At least they have a warranty but I doubt it covers labor.
