I went with the YOKOHAMA AVID W4S XL. Pretty pleased so far but it is no substitute obviously for the Mich PS2s :(

I agree with Pilot Sport A/S, however they are pretty pricey. Although I have never run them, I read great things about the pirelli p-zero nero M and S on tirerack and they are much more affordable than the michelins.

    Re: All Season Tire recommendation

how about recommending NOT getting all season tires at all...is that an option? You live in Michigan, so you get serious cold and snow.

For $750 you can get a set of OEM wheels with winter tires. Run those from Nov-Mar. Then run pure summer sport tires on your other wheels the rest of the year.

Get the most out of the car for 8 months, and be safe the other 4. Don't compromise to save $200/year on a $50,000 car. That's the definition of false economy.

Where do you suppose these $750 oem wheels+tires sell?

Conti's alone cost $900+ and thats with a good deal and installation.

+1 on the Continental ContiExtreme Contacts. The car handles great in the snow or the dry. The last time I was up in Madison it snowed 16 inches in a week and ended up driving a lot of times on roads that weren't plowed but I never had a problem.

I run them here in NorCal but will likely never use them in snow. Great in the dry and the rain tho. I think they are OK for light snow, but not for serious stuff. Check the ratings and rebview at Tire Rack- that's where I got mine ($50 rebate also there).

My thoughts exactly.. All season tires suck year round. Quit being a cheap ass and get some proper rubber. You don't live in California...

    Re: All Season Tire recommendation

congrats on taking the more sensible and practical approach to your tire choice. AS tires are great for the value they offer PROVIDED you do not exceed their limits. Most here who dislike them are people who like to run their cars on the edge and most of them have deep pockets too so they can afford to:

    * Pay a lawyer to get their speeding tickets dismissed or reduced in penalty.
    * If ^^^ don't work, to pay their tickets.
    * buy new tires every 10,000 miles.
    * replace worn out brake pads and brake components long before they're actually recommended to be replaced.
    * replace the clutch and its components way long before it's due.

You get the idea right? Let me put it this way...if you drive the way you would if a cop was tailing you everywhere you went, AS tires are surely enough. But if you like to drive as if youve just stolen a car and are trying to get away from cops chasing you down, well, go with what the others here have said and get Summer-Winter tire sets. And be prepared to replace your winter tires (ofc depending on use) every few winters.

As to your original question, I have had great experience with Bridgestone Potenza AS in my other car. A bit on the pricey side as with the Michelins, but i speak for the Bridgestones and they last forever.

    Re: All Season Tire recommendation

If your going to drive it like a granny why did you pay extra for the big motor? sounds like a A4 would be a better car for you Beelzeebub. Same performance the way you drive it and the gas money sure goes farther.
You paid extra for the S or RS because you like to drive.
You should paid extra for the good tires that let you drive it as hard as possible.

Drive it like its stolen! Your right, you have to pay to play, I buy lots of Tires, Brakes, Clutches, Gas. But what's the point in buying a high performance car if your never going to exceed the limits of AS tires?

I say, get some dedicated snow tires instead. Keep them for winter and rotate the summer performance tires.

I had A/S tires, but they suck in the summer...I sold them and got dedicated winter tires.

+1 for 2 separate sets and I don't have deep pockets. I bought a set of used Dunlop Wintersport M3's that were only used for one season from a fellow 'ziner for only $400. That's 1/2 off and they will probably be good for another 2-3 seasons.

have to agree here. my brother has those on is 04 s4...i have the conti2s on my s4. his extremes were barely better in the snow than my conti2s...just slightly better. its a great tire for the price but i'd reconsider this as a "good" all season tire.

your going to have to pay to play.

i have been looking myself since conti2s completely suck and its like driving a death trap in the winter snow. but after being in his car for some good snowfall....its not that great that i would recommend it to someone.

I'm running Yokohama YK520's on my winter wheels. They're pretty good all around and okay in the snow. When they're worn out they're getting replaced with Dunlop Winter Sports or Hankook Ice Bears.

IMO, all Season tires are "no season" tires! That said, if you want to compromise on performance then use a cheap set of summers AND a second set of winters. This way you'll be safe all year 'round. There is no comparison in braking and control between an A/S tire in winter's cold slippery conditions and a dedicated winter tire ... especially when it can be a matter of inches between a costly (and potentially dangerous) accident and the avoidance of one.

Conti what? I said to get a seperate set of winter tires....not Conti A/S tires, the most expensive option possible!

I bought used Pirelli wintersports for $250. They were in awesome shape. I mounted them on 18" OEM wheels. You can get a set of B6 S4 18" OEM wheels for $300-500, depending on condition. $750 is generous.

These are winter tires...proper winter tires which mean that in 1 foot of snow, I don't get stuck....in an S4. I can also stop like nobody's business. A/S tires to save a few bucks make absolutely zero sense in my opinion.

If you really love the car so much, why risk it in winter, and why suffer the under-performance in summer?? Plus the faster wear will end up costing you more, since no tire designed to be firm enough for summer can handle a Michigan winter...they'll turn to rocks. Or vice versa...if they're soft enough to handle a Michigan winter, they'll shred to pieces after a couple of summers.

    Re: All Season Tire recommendation

Sounds like there's a battle brewing between A/S vs. winter/summer sets.

OP...why don't you start a poll on this, rather than deciding on A/S right away?

The only well worded answer in favour of A/S was from Beelzebub...and to support his thesis, he basically suggested driving the car as if it were a 1.3 litre diesel engined minivan. I'm not sure what you bought the car for, but if you like to drive, and don't like to smash into stuff when it snows, take a good hard look at a good set of lightly used winters on nice OEM wheels. No sacrifice in looks, no sacrifice in performance (and by performance I mean being able to handle all conditions).

Hell there are ALWAYS guys selling good sets of winters already mounted/balanced on winter wheels. Guys who lease an S4 often get a set, then sell the set when they return the car at lease end. No brainer. Check Audizine, Craigslist etc.

    because i can.

edit - I'd also like to add I currently run Michelin PS2 SUMMER tires right now and we've had a ton of snow and ice here in NJ in the past few months. I have never had any problem with grip. Not saying that I am setting the right example by running summers in the dead of winter, but just to make the point that if i don't have much of a problem with these tires, how much more AS tires? or even (yes I'll say it) snow tires? But I just cannot justify the added expense of maintaining 2 sets of wheels wherein the winter tires wear out so much so that they're only good for a few winters.

i choose when and where to flex the car's muscle. Youre probably one of the types that would throw the car into a 25 mph corner at 60 mph just for kicks because "its a high performance" car. thats shows poor judgment if you ask me.

Thats quite the assumption. You just admitted to liking to flex the cars muscle once in a while. Depending on how you define that it\s almost surely against the law. I never said you should drive like an idiot. But since we now are over the naive idea that the car will always be driven in a boring, practical but legal way we both are going to drive the car close enough to the limit that it puts a smile on our face. My car will have proper rubber under it no matter what time of year it is. Yours.. not so much. Who shows poor judgment?
its only money. you own an S4, an extra set of wheel and tires shouldn't exactly change your life, sliding out into an intersection and getting T-boned defiantly could... once again, DON'T BE A CHEAP F*CK. Get your self some real tires or at least stop giving out bad advice.

Definitely get separate sets. a/s tires do not handle good in the snow and if you do look on tire rack, the ones that do very well in the snow, suck in the summer, same with the ones that do well in the summer, they suck in the snow. all season tires are for people that drive toyota camarys and honda accords. you have an Audi,a German sports car. get yourself some blizzak lm-25 for the winter and some continental sportcontact 2 or 3 or eagle f1 gs-d3 for the summer. you don't need separate winter wheels. just alternate the tires unless you are running 19"s, then yo need winter wheels. winter tires for an 19" wheel are outrageously expensive.

    Re: All Season Tire recommendation

Well, I guess I'll be doing a test tomorrow as I drive to Toronto.

I had a slow leak on one of the tires, which turned out to be damaged inner side wall. They had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's, so I went that way rather than risk driving on a damaged tire.

    Thanks for the advice.

it's true what people say above and i'm in the same category. I have pilot PS2s oh my HRE's for summer and Blizzaks lm-22s on OEMs for winter. if you are in Michigan... that would be the only route i would take, have winters and summers.

may it snow 2 feet in Toronto and make you realize you made a horrible decision in disrespecting a fantastic car with all-seasons! (25Quattro FTW)

I did Bridgestone Potenza 960's. Had them for just over a year now, other than the frozen flat spots (if I do not drive it for a few days) They have performed really well, for my style of driving. Good treadwear too, probably gonna last 25K. I think that I paid $225 ea (245/35/19).

funny enough...6 inches of snow in Toronto tonight...should be a good test if you're still here.
