    Stud broken off of turbo

So i put my VMR test pipe on my car and noticed that i had to torque the nuts down a little more on the turbo side of the test pipe because it was leaking. So i try to tighten it a little more without even putting that much pressure the stud breaks off. At first i thought the socket just fell off of the ratchet, but when i pulled the ratchet out the socket was still there. This is what i found under the car. Sorry for the blurry pics, took with my phone.

This just ruined my day! Anyone know about how much it would cost to get this fixed? Its just one stud. Its the top stud on the engine side of the turbo.

Re: Stud broken off of turbo

My younger brother did the same on his 1.8t this weekend. Yours look like it broke even with the outer edge of your downpipe, so you might be able to get something on it and turn it out. Chances are you'll have to remove the downpipe to do this. Otherwise a torch and an easy out is your best bet.

I don't mean to put it back on, but these studs are threaded on both sides, so if theres enough of it sticking out once the downpipe is off you might be able to hit it with some heat or pblaster and remove the old stud. Audi has new ones for $4.xx something.

His were snapped flush in the housing, so I had to heat it up and use an easy out.

Re: Stud broken off of turbo

i would probably ruin something else on the car out of anger if this happened to me... but ya if i was financially stable, i would go big turbo and forget about it. i was scared of this happening when i put my vmr test pipe on too but someone warned me about it so i was extra carefull

I broke the stud on my old 1.8T turbo. It's not that hard to do.
