    B7 Oil Change DIY, how?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there a thread (with photos if possible) on how to do it yourself on a B7 S4? If there is, it should be pinned on top of the forum...

Sorry and I did use the 'search' function... I used wods like oil change, oil change DIY...but so many threads that were not what I was looking for came up...

    Thank you in advance.

p.s. I googled and found the write up with pics for B5 S4 only...thanks.

Re: B7 Oil Change DIY, how?

Need to get under car, remove belly pan, and then you'll see a torx bolt in the oil pan.

    You drain the oil.

Take the filter out (it's in your engine bay at the top of the engine, a huge plastic nut looking thing)

You put the oil drain plug back on

fill her up with 9.5 qts of the good stuff.

You put the belly pan back on.

I change mine every 5k...sometimes sooner, depending on how aggressively the car was driven.

Ex: If I track the car ( 2 day event)...I change the oil right after.

    Better safe than sorry.

Re: B7 Oil Change DIY, how?

An oil extractor (Pela 6000 or Mityvac) works great on these cars and makes the job one you can do without having to get under the car and remove the splash shield. With that it is very straightforward:
    1. Unscrew the oil filter cover (oil will drain into pan)
    2. Install new filter and 0-ring; replace cover
    3. Push extractor hose down dipstick tube, pump out oil (may have to empty extractor once if it holds less than nine quarts)
    4. Refill with about 9.5 quarts of new oil

Recommended oil change interval on this engine is 10K miles. If you use high-quality synthetic oils, this is probably OK. Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, and Castrol Syntec 0 or 5w-40 are available most everywhere. European brands are good also, but will cost more (Pentosin, Motul, Total). I am going to try Shell Rotella 5w-40 full synthetic next time-- it is lower priced and seems good quality.

unscrew the oil filter first to release the oil into the oil pan. Then drain the pan So the oil in the oil circuit will flow out into the pan so u can drain everything.

And if you're not going to use an oil extractor, mark the location of the drain plug on your belly pan and do yourself a favor, tape it off with blue tape and drill a 3" hole though the belly pan. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle next time you go to change your oil.

Yeep, just used lubro-moly too! I heard it was the best, and seems pretty great so far. I also used an oil extractor, which made it a breeze! I did have to empty it once though, but for not having to jack the car up or remove the belly pan, well worth it. I got the mytivac through amazon for about 70 shipped.

One other owner suggested removing the belly pan and then cutting a small hole where the oil drain screw is located, and then the next time you don't have to remove the belly pan.

Ok, I do have an oil extractor. I thought I need to extract the oil first THEN replace the filter? What do you do to clean the oil drained into the pan? I assume the 'pan' you're talking about is the plastic belly under the car?

Re: B7 Oil Change DIY, how?

No, the oil pan. When you unscrew the oil filter cover there is a valve that will release and drain oil in the filter housing into the oil pan. You want to change the filter first, so that old oil can be extracted.

Its a very easy engine to change the oil on with an extractor, It can all be done from the top with no mess.

To me it's never not about the cost. I'd much rather do everything on the car my self or with help from buddies than pay someone to do it. Oil change is such a simple task and besides, the only way you'll know it was done right is if you do it yourself. You never know ... even at the dealer some douche could be having a bad day and not wanting to do a good job.

Do the Oil Extractors get the same amount of oil out as removing the plug? Are the jugs on the extractors marked (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc quarts)?

Thx in advance, Carson! How long will you be in town until? I think the part where I need help is replacing the oil filter... This thing looks very different than the ones I have seen... Should I go to Barrier and tell them I need an oil filter? What else do I need from Barrier? Btw, what sizes are the tools to remove oil filter cap and other stuff?

My car is at 4k miles so not quite 5k, yet... so if I miss you this time, we can always do it in the future since you're up here quite often... let me know.

I heard from various ppl (google it and you'll find even bmw peeps use it, too) that it works fine... Google it and you'll find lots of reviews.

The jug does not have any markings... that's what sucks.

The Pela 6000 holds 6 liters and has markings at 1 liter intervals.

On my 1.8T, I ran a test by pulling the oil drain plug after uising the extractor. Just a few drops came out--not much at all.

Pela sells a 14 liters version which I have but have not used it on the S4 yet. I've used it on my lady's 325 and it pulled exact same amount it took to fill it. I won't change mine for another couple of months but will pull it all out with Pela and then check the pan and see if there is anything left.

Not sure if I'm pickin up what your puttin down. If the oil level was full when you started the job, then you would only need to put in as much as you pulled out regardless of amount (1 qt out = 1 qt in, 5 qts out = 5 qts in, etc.). Maybe I'm reading into your wording a little too far, but I got a laugh out of it.

It's different, but it's actually a lot easier to replace it. You can get the filters from the dealer or online. I bought mine from ecstuning since I needed to get some parts for my b5 at that time. You need

    oil filter
    oil filter o ring
    drain plug washer

according to bentley's manual, the socket size is 36mm

I can send you all the diagrams if you want.

I remember the first time I changed my oil on my b6, it took me 30 minutes to find the filter. That stupid plastic piece with the audi symbol on it is quite deceiving.

The extractor is extremely easy to use (make sure the oil is warm, not hot). Just push the correct sized tube (you get three) down the dip-stick hole to the bottom and pump the handle a few times to create a vacuum. The tubes they provide aren’t quite long enough so you’ll have to raise the extractor off the groung a bit by placing it on a box or something. I use a plastic milk crate. While the oil is extracting I replace the oil filter. The filter is located on top of the engine, under the trim cover with the Audi logo, at the rear. You’ll see a black plastic domed cover with a plastic nut molded into the top…the filter is inside.

So with an extractor, you don't need to replace the drain plug?

If you use an extractor you drain plug never comes out.

What I meant is that the extractor pulled out everything out. A lot of people say that it will not do that. Her car takes 7qts and that's how much the extractor pulled out. 7qts went in.
Not like I pulled out 5 and put 5 back in

My whole point being it pulled all of it out.

To revive the thread, a question. Using the oil extractor, do I need to remove the oil filter before the extraction, during or after. Does it matter at all?
