Audigeeks seems to be a "cliquey" forum - guests are banned from viewing any board.

    Not good!

Try again. Some moderator added ban triggers from UK and EU IP addresses a while back due to some spamming issues.
    Sorry.

If you are not having any missfire/blowout problems, then it's good to just leave it alone.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I'm considering a move into a different vehicle too, so I don't want to make a list of all the things that would be needed to repair it down the road. It's fine for me, but explaining that to someone else makes it look shady.

Hey Jeff.. I'm in CA also, there's no code thrown is there? Anyway to get through smog with this mod? I think i'm missing on the top end, but i'm guessing it's just my gap old plugs/gaps... I'd still love to try this mod...

You will get no code--because far as your ECU is concerned, it is still pushing out the same signal to tell the ICM/Coil to fire. On the newer coils, and ICM is simply just built-into the coils individually. The ECU then verifies that combustion/ignition has been achieved, otherwise it will then throw a code for missfires. It's like running D1S xenon bulbs with built-in igniter, versus running D2S bulbs with the igniter built into the ballast....the input source does NOT change.

As far as smog goes, I don't think going with newer OEM coils will really trigger a red-flag, unless the inspector KNOWS the Audi on the back of his head...OR unless you do a really bad wiring job. Emission techs are more concerned with verifying that the vacuuming plumbing matches the label/sticker on the hood, and that all items (intake, cat, smog pumps) are working.

Quite honestly, your car will actually burn cleaner and more efficient with a more efficient ignition system. Everytime your coil or spark makes a small "hiccup"...your HC readings go through the roof. This is perhaps another reason why Audi went to the pop-in style coil packs (which produce even higher voltage, at the cost of longevity) on the 2001 AWM's+, which also qualified the car as a "ULEV" (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle), while other vehicles that same year (TT) still used the bolt-in "E" style coils and remained a "LEV". There's some food for thought.

Sounds like a good upgrade for big turbo aeb cars.

Did this last night useing the Audigeeks site, the only issue i came across was the picture and the diagram showed differant wire routings. The one on the diagram is the one that works. Other than that no issues. Now my clutch slips easier.

A place between here and there

This upgrade is recommended for AEB people with big turbo applications whom would require more voltage for the spark plugs. If you happen to have a BT application on an AEB with misfire issues due to not having enough voltage, this DIY could fix that issue. Or if you are tireed of having your ICM crap out on you, there ya go.

I think I am going to do this myself, I think I have the same problem and I was thinking if my ICM is going out. I am not sure if I should just replace it and see how that changes things or go ahead with this mod.

Where can I find the connectors for the new style coils? I am sure the junkyards in my area don't have Audi's from the late 90s, let alone 00 or 01.

Follow the wiring schematics, NOT the pictures (for I've seen some very on different cars)
