    Anyone running drilled rotors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know that you can't track drilled rotors, but I don't track my car. I've heard bad things about drilled rotors and good things about them. I'm considering either the Disc Italia rotors or the Brake Performance rotors -- I like the fact that the Brake Performance rotors are zinc plated and they have a warranty against workmanship defects and warpage.

Anyway... I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get flamed for this post, but hey... Some people paint their grilles... I like drilled rotors. I just bought S4 brakes from Shokan off of a 2004 S4 they're dismantling. I'm going to upgrade my Avant's brakes.

I plan on refinishing the calipers I bought, then swapping out the ones that are on my S4 and doing the new rotors on that car and the B7 anti-rattle clips that have the S4 logo.

Once the calipers are off my S4 I'll refinish them and mount them on my Avant. This way I have nice looking calipers on both cars. The only question that remains is what color to paint them. Red is definitely out. It's either going to black or silver. I hate decisions like this.

I'm a big fan of zimmerman. They are good quality german company thats is reasonably priced. By the way I have owned cross drilled rotors on all of my cars and never had any cracks due to heat stresses.

    Re: Anyone running drilled rotors?

My Brembo BBK has drilled, the first set was tracked and after many miles very small cracks were found. but this was after running a full set of race pads. My new set of rings are still looking pretty much new. Merc been running them on stock cars for years, I think it depends on the construction of the discs.

I just painted my calipers silver today. I have drilled/slotted rotors. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Drilled and slotted GSG's. Love these things. Calipers painted black with S4 spring clips.

drilled rotors are crap. that whole design idea came from Porsche how ever Porsche actually casts their rotors with holes instead of drilling like most aftermarket rotors are. go slotted. better function and good look.

    Re: Anyone running drilled rotors?

Most people would agree that drilled rotors are not what is preferred. If anything go slotted rotors. Check these out. They are top quality and they shave off 10lbs per side. JHM is apparently working on the rears as we speak. They are top quality rotors.

So are the silver calipers the stock color of the B7 cars or did you paint yours silver? It looks really good. I dig the B7 anti-rattle springs. I bought them for my car. I can't wait to do it up.

I painted them, although the stock color is grey. Looks better now in my opinion and should be easier to keep clean.

Yes, God forbid I love the Lemans DBR9 for everything it accomplishes in it's racing history along with the fact that I assisted in the braking design and implementation decisions of that car.
The only rice in here thusfar is your obnoxious yellow car with completely different model LED's mounted into the wrong location of a hacked up aftermaket front bumper that you didn't bother to get the rest of the kit to flow with the car whilst removing anything that "was" s4 and turning the car into an external A4 along with the factory 17" wheels.

So yes, I'd say I know more about what an "S4" needs than you.

Kinda funny hearing this come from you, because i have seen you do the same to others on occasions.

Anyway back to your original question.. If you plan on doing the S4 logo rattle clips i would do silver calipers because the rattle clip itself is silver. IMO any other color and the clip visually jumps out out you too much. If you do decide to go another color there are only 3 good options IMO, silver, red, and black all of which will look good.

If i remember correctly our avant is silver right? Maybe it might be better to go w/ red or black to break up the silver exterior and silver rims. BTW i'm sure of the finish on the rotors but i would also suggest picking up a can of spray paint and freshening up the look of the hats on the rotors prior to putting them on.

oh you assisted in the braking design? WOE IS ME! good thing that same implementation is available through the GSG drilled rotors for our cars.

lol. yeah, my car is obnoxious, ghetto, and hacked together personally, i don't need the world to know I have an S4, whatever floats your boat.

Yeah... it's a message board. Everyone has their thing. Funny, when I first saw your car I thought to myself "Ugh... tacky", but I never thought to say anything because it was a) not a nice thing to do b) none of my business. Your car isn't hurting my world one bit. Funny though how you have appointed yourself in charge of what is "cool" or "rice" when you should be one to talk.

Whatever... I don't need your approval to enjoy my cars, and yes, that's cars plural, the way I like them. Go put as many LEDs on your car as will fit. Then drive through New Mexico and see if they mistake it for a low-flying UFO. I'm done...

    Re: Anyone running drilled rotors?

Drilled will resist fade\overheat by better letting air in through the holes (it simply cools and allows airflow).
In general street use it's not really going to benefit much. If you do the occasional track or spirited canyon runs you will notice the difference.
If your car is strictly track only, I'd suggest slotted only as the demands of repeated 120-30mph stopping all day will put the greatest stress on the rotor (though I still have yet for anyone to report back to me with problems on our rotors)

Mostly if you're city driving it's for looks, similar to if u put anything carbon or a shortshifter on your car, or exhaust for sound.

I for one can say without a doubt I noticed a difference when I put on the GSG drilled/slotted rotors. I do occasional VERY spirited canyon runs and these things bite harder than the stock rotors.

Street feel is identical to the stock rotors which to me is exactly the way you want it anyway.

    Re: Anyone running drilled rotors?

I would never put cross drilled rotors on my car. Slotted is the farthest I'm willing to go. I've seen too many cracked or shattered cross drilled rotors on autox cars and even on slow honda daily drivers. But its your car, you do as you wish. One other thing....I would not put any brake component on my car just because it looks cool. My life is more important than the way my brakes look.

    Re: Anyone running drilled rotors?

Which is why ours comes with crack free warranties.
I've tested the materials and way we build the rotors on a 800whp Supra that's tracked quite often as well as a Ram2500 HD for over 70k miles which is utilized in towing and hauling. Both are stress or otherwise crack free running drilled + Slotted.

I wouldn't even sell them if there was a 0.0001% chance of them failing. I won't have death or disfigurement on my conscience.

Concerns about drilling are quite correct to have if they're drilled past the point of the cast being made.

One other thing....I would not put any brake component on my car just because it looks cool. My life is more important than the way my brakes look.

It is one thing to question the quality of a particular product, but to lump them all together and paint them all in a bad light is just ignorant! Many cars come OEM with cross drilled rotors, most race teams still primarily run cross drilled rotors without issue. If you don't want them fine, but to suggest someone else is putting their life in danger by using them is just irresponsible!
