Thumbs down My negative experience with Performance Engineered Systems (PES)

Hello every one, it's been a while since I've been on here and I hope every one is doing well.

I wanted to share my experience with Performance Engineered Systems (PES) Tuning. I've tried not to say anything negative about them or their support up until this point, but I feel it's important for me to share my negative experience with them. I don't want any one to go through what I have been going through.

The Summer of 2007 I bought the PES G3 Supercharger for my A4. Before purchasing, I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't need to do any other modifications to the engine. I was told, by Tony, the owner, that I could install the G3 on a stock motor with no problems. Later that summer, I had the G3 installed by a shop that had experience with Audis and with the G3 supercharger. Aside from some quirks, the car was running and I was able to drive it. Shortly after I started getting check engine lights, both solid and flashing, that would come back after being reset. I spoke with Tony and Hugo at PES and was told that a software update would help. I had the shop that installed the G3 do the software update, but the update only made things worse. The car ran poorly and was a pain to drive. Unfortunately, this was my daily driver and I had to make do with driving it until we could figure out what was wrong. PES agreed to work with the shop to see if they could work together to get it running correctly. Before this could happen I ended up getting a flashing check engine light (January of 2008) that would not go away. I had the car looked at by both an independent shop and my Audi dealer, who both found that the engine had been damaged ("blown"). As I realized this was a big deal, I called PES (late January 2008) to see what could be done. I was unable to reach Tony and spoke with Hugo. I asked him to have Tony call me by the end of that week, but I never heard back from anyone. I had the car fixed out of pocket and decided to consult with a lawyer. It was decided to send weekly letters asking PES to contact us, but we heard no response. After a few months of sending letters with no response, I decided to call PES again. I spoke with Patrick on January 6th, 2009 and he suggested I speak with Tony. I called back and left a message for Tony that day, but never heard back. I have called twice (three times?) since then and still have not heard back. I'm not sure what my next move is, but in my opinion this is horrible customer service. There website states they offer a warranty and their on hold message mentions all the benefits and safety of buying from them, but I guess that doesn't apply to me.

If your thinking of buying anything from PES, be aware that if anything goes wrong with their product or with your car, you may be on your own.

    Thank you for reading.

az member biketsai with a b5 a4 1.8 is facing similar problems with pes I believe. He purchased a used Pes T28 bt kit and contacted Pes due to some flaw in the tune. From what I've been hearing from this member, pes is blaming the car for not having adequate parts to support the tune yet this member has installed all the parts and components that came with the kit.

A friend of mine had his Jetta tuned by them and the software caused flashing CELs at WOT when he hit full boost. The car was never the same, he ended up selling it because he spent too much already trying to get it right. They just kept selling him more and more parts/services that never fixed it.

    Just playing devil's advocate...

Did anyone have their car specifically tuned (custom tune) or did everyone just take what PES offered up?

What problems did you see when you logged it?

Re: My negative experience with Performance Engineered Systems (PES)

My file was written for the UK but would ping like a bitch when driven hard in the end I knew I could not run it on track day because it sounded like some dropprd a bag of nails in the engine and on hot days I would have to take it easy on her because she would ping.

Tuners here stated the mapping was not right but PES would tell me to check this replace that in the end I gave up on her and sold it when a 1.8Tq came up as these are rare here in the UK.

lets try this from the other side....

has anyone had a positive experience with the G3 kit for the 3.0l that we are aware of from the PES side of the equation?

Interesting question. There are a few people with the orginal GIAC tune, no problems that I've heard. Then there is my car. Technically I bought it after PES no longer had relations with GIAC so my software should be original PES software. Aside from slight cold start issues, I never have misfiring and my A/F stays slightly above 11:1. There has only been one log of the original GIAC tune and my file looks very close, but not identical. So who knows what I have. Then, weeks after I got my file PES released an "update" to "fix" the cold start issues. Fortunately, I was too lazy to remove my ECU and not have my car for a few days. Since then, its become apparent this newest file is causing lots of problems and PES will not issue the old file. I almost wonder if I got the GIAC file after they were no longer supposed to be issuing it, but will likely never know. Regardless, my car is in great shape by all measures (Blackstone analysis, logging) but I feel for those whose engines have blown.

My friend did. He has a '98 B5 2.8L with a PES Supercharger on it. That was back with Giac/PES tuning. When he installed the kit he had great difficulties getting the car to run right (and well). In the end, he had his fuel injectors flow-matched and found someone that hacked the encryption in the software and they then tweaked the software to get the car running very well. This was back in the early 2000s I believe.

The car is not making a considerable amount of power but it is reliable. Peak boost is 7psi on a cold day but the car drives solid. It now has 170k on the odometer (original motor) and counting. I just did a timing belt job, valve cover and cam tensioner gaskets, S4 suspension and brakes, etc... The engine is spotless inside.
