    weekend project--any tips?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
soo.. I am going to try and do VCG, Cam seals, plugs and tensioner seals on my b5 s4 avant this weekend or next. (Depending on when I get up the nerve to start it) I ordered the kit from Blauparts and also a Bentley manual should be here tomorrow. Does anyone have the tool needed for the Tensioner or know of a local place to rent one (south denver area). This will be my first time taking on a DIY task like this, so any tips would be great. Or if anyone is willing to lend a hand.. beer and cash could be arranged. Let me know Thanks guys!

the hardest part is cleaning out all the old oil/dirt or sometime ive seen gasket sealant in there, theres not alot of room to work in there so take your time, brake clean works wonders along with a 90 deg pick tool. when are you planing to start this project?

    Re: weekend project--any tips?

Not too sure when I will start....I still need to track down the tensioner tool. I may just order one and start next weekend. However, i am getting anxious to start ASAP. I do have some brake cleaner, thanks for the tip on that. I have done some searching and the pick tool pops up alot i am going to go out and get some o ring picks. How long do you think this work should take? I have also heard seen mixed ideas on using sealant on the half moon and the tensioner seal..anythoughts?

    Re: weekend project--any tips?

i try not to use sealant, BUT if i feel that i didnt get the area clean clean then i use VERY little on the half moon. a few other things ive run into, one of the guide sleaves falls out completely, thats bad but rare, theres a screen in the tensioner oil passage that likes to fall out while your trying to put it back together, that causes a bad leak. ill look and see how many tools i have and let you know, and if you have any time this week you can come by my shop and look cause i will be doing this to my car and i have a few tensioners laying around so you can get a good idea of what your up against.

heres a pic of what my car currently looks like

    Re: weekend project--any tips?

no the heads are not ready yet, and neither is the block so in the mean time im just doing the t/b w/p and v/c gaskets chain ten gaskets and cam seals, also JHM'S fmic, JHM 5mm intake spacers, JHM eletric fan kit, APR Y pipe, and 034 street den motor mounts. thats just on the engine when im done with that the tranny comes out and will be getting a rebuild with a .60 6th gear from JHM an alum flywheel with a stage 3 clutch masters kit the rest of the JHM shifter linkage, the JHM Solid Shifter Centering Spring, 034 street den tran mounts and i think thats it for now.

here are the heads im working on now one almost done and the other i havent started on yet.

and yes im still loving the JHM SS and cant wait till im done with the rest of it. Oh btw you couldnt tell that i really like Jason at JHM could you, so if anyone needs/wants any of his products let me know i/he can get anything that you could want his site isnt even close to showing what he has/can get. im trying to become a dealer for him so any help would be greatly apprreciated.
