17in Wheels to big for 1998 audi a4 quattro??

So, I went to my mechanic because I heard a winding sound coming from the wheel. I initially thought it was a wheel bearing but it turns out my wheels were rubbing against the suspension in the front. I know you can fit 17in wheels and bigger on this model car so what is going on with my wheels? Are they too big? Or is there some that I need to do to make these guys fit better?

I know this does not make any sense...But there is like no room between the tire and the suspension. And when the car is running at high speeds it lowers so there is even less room between the tire and suspension.

It was a joke - check your tire size like stated above - I have a 98 with 17's 38mm(I think) offset and 225/45/17. Do you have a suspension drop?

No suspension or drop...This is just ridiculous, I just got these rims too. I am pretty sure you can fit 18in rims on the B5. I how can you check the offset?

those are the a3 rims? you can fit 19's or even 20's on a b5 with the correct offset and tire. You're gunna need spacers and longer bolts to make them work.

you need wheel spacers. 10mm all around should do it. i would take them off for the time if it was me. Nice wheels though.

Can't tell you shit without the offset. Would suggest checking the inside of the rim for a number somewhere.

Sorry, read to quick - thought that was some posting the proper size. I'm searching now to figure out what the stock offset on an A3 is to see how much of a spacer you will need. 10mm sounds about right, but need to be sure

if he's getting minimal rubbing 10mm would be the perfect fit. prolly wont even put them flush to the wheel well. consider them to have the same offset as a MK5.

Im getting some great feedback guys really appreciate it...I am getting minimal rubbing on all of them except the for the front right which is rubbing against the front fender i think.

That thread says A3 stock 17's have a 57mm offset so as stated above 10mm spacers all around

yeah, spacers will fix it. you could get bigger to flush them but at minimal I would say 10mm. That's a little under a half inch that the wheel would push out.

Does spacers fix the offset or just the space between the tire and suspension??

offset is the distance from the back mount surface of the wheel to the center of the wheel

spacers will correct the offset by mounting your tire further away from the suspension.

Spacers put the wheels farther out (think toward you when your looking at the wheel fromt the pic)

Take a wheel off and look at the number inside the back of the wheel

"ETxx" (xx will be your number)

I got 7.5X17-56mm for the offset on the wheels i have on right now

the 17's that came on some 2001 a4's had an offset of 43

My rims dont rub but i would like to put spacers on to look a little nicer, but where can i get the extended lug bolts?
