    Trans whine

I just started hearing a whine in the car. I first thought that it was just the turbos spooling. However I'm starting to think it's the transmission or something in that general direction. I hear it the most when I'm in 5th gear. When I'm on the gas I hear it and as soon as I let off it goes away. I do get it once in a while on other gears but 5th is the noisiest. Could it be the trans going bad or the quatro system? Any ideas? The car has 103,770 miles on it and the clutch has been replaced. Any help would be apprecited.

Funny that you post this, i asked the same question a few days ago for the exact same noise.

I am thinking its my center support bearing now that is on the driveshaft that is bad. One of the things that causes it to make more noise is when its cold out from what ive searched.

Let me know what you find out on yours.

mine has done the same thing for a while now, it goes away in boost which is why I have been told it is diverter valve related...

    Re: Trans whine

It's weird cause it doesn't seem to do it in the other gears and I'm usually not going fast either. I have to turn down the stereo to hear it. The funny thing is that I'm having all kinds of little problems since I came back from my last deployment for which the car sat for almost 3 months. My wife only drove it a couple of times. I need to talk to the guy on Monday that's done some of the big work on the car to see what he thinks.
