    Question Funky Smell...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Lately I have been getting a rather pungent almost like a burning smell when I turn my heat it. I am trying to figure out if it might be the heater core, maybe just a funky cabin filter. Filter was just replaced 5k ago, so I am not sure where else it can be coming from. Any feedback on what this may be?

    thanks.

side note: anyone know where I can get a more resilient oil pan?

I am not claiming to be an expert but I have been doing some homework on this topic as I have the same issue. Most often people point to a valve cover gasket leak (oil hitting exhaust causing burning smell). I haven't verified it on my own car yet but here is the DIY for the valve cover gasket replacement: http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...alvecover.html

Yeah, it is most likely an oil leak from the valve cover gasket or cam adjuster seal. The oil drips right onto the exhaust

If it smells like dirty socks from your dash vents, it is most likely fungus growing in the A/C evaporator core. Run the heater/A/C in Auto ECON mode, that stops refrigerant flow through the evaporator core allowing it to dry out. You can also spray a full can of Lysol into the fan intake with the blower fan running on HIGH speed manual, with the filter removed, to help kill any fungus. Cover the dash vents with paper towels taped in place first.

The plastic PCV line at the back of the head has probably deteriorated and come apart.

Does it seem to get better or go away when you turn the Recirc. Button on?

A burning smell is probably the valve cover gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold. I had the same issue a few years ago. New VCG cured it. I had a severe case of the "smelly sock" syndrome on my '97 Passat VR6 when a mouse decided top make a nest on top of my cabin filter.
