Thinking out loud about painting my grills and potential options.

I'm not sure what i want to to do here. The goal is to get rid of the chrome but i have a few options and am not sure what to do. The reason why i say so is because my car is grey and the OE S4 center grills have a greyish tint to them which actuall matches the paint on the rest of the car fairly well. Because of that there are a couple of options that i am considering and i was curious what you guys thought.

    1) Black both of them out to match the fog light housings on the bottom.

    2) Paint the chrome trim on the top grill grey to match the exterior paint of the car and leave the grill slats alone becaue they already have the OE greyish tint to them. Then paint the lower one black so that it us uniform across the bottom.

The grille in this pic has the stock finish on it and he painted the outer rim grey to match. This what i am thinking of doing on mine so imagine this combo on a grey car. The only difference is that on my car the bottom would be black to match to foglight housings.

I am leaning towards 2 because worse case scenario i can paint over the outer chome ring if i don't like it and then black it all out. Which option do you guys think would look better.

    the grey is interesting..

I had this same issue but I chose black since it matched so many more things then the grey did.. My window trim is black and my B pillar is matte black now as well.

I have a similar dilema.. Black tint, black trim coming, black rs4 reps, etc..

    What color is your car?

there was someone not too long ago that had pics of his car and had an interesting paint job for the grille. The bottom of the top grille was black, and the top part of the bottom grille was black, so it kind of simulated the B7 grille. It's just paint, so why not try that on for size? I'll try to find his thread. I think the guy was slammed with some Merc wheel....I THINK!

Thats what i'm thinking.. I'm doing the bottom black regardless, so doing the top outer ring grey is no big deal. Worse case scenario i can just spray black over the grey outer ring if i don't like it and then do the grill black as well..

yea. I personally have the chrome surrounds gloss black, but it looks a little off. Whenever I get motivated again I wanna try a satin black (like my rear valence) or even matching the gunmetal color of the grille itself. That picture above looks pretty BA.

    hmm decisions decisions...

This car looks very familiar. Plasti-dip will make it look NEW OEM BLACK!! paint em all!!! I did try and scuff the chrome trim with a fine grit sand paper a little bit when I did mine. It's been over a year, and things still look GREAT! Do it. I went back to the black rings too, just had em done shiny black for contrast.

nogaro with blackout trim/grill looks so good. Love the RS4 Titanium in Sprint or whatever they call it.

I don't like the blackrings...I think the logo should remain
    1. untouched
    2. on the car

I dirve an "S"..who cares???....you know you drive an "S" F...everybody else, if you can't pick out the differences between the models your not an enthusiast!period. JMO, but who the "F" am I??? again..JMO

Where did you get the plastidip you are used (what store)?

In the past i have used Krylons primer along w/ their Fusion paint and have had good results. They also have bunch of color options. The advertise their Fusion line as self priming but i always primer anyway.

Krylon has lots of colors and if you it shiny, I'd try that.....but Plastidip(available at home deopt)will give you almost exact OEM look and since its a plastic coating, it holds up really well to rocks and whatever else comes flying at your car

Thanks. Just try a quick "paint" or "photoshop" of a pic of your car. Or send me a pic and I'll do it.

Yo Mark-Vader, I like your first choice. While you're at it, spray those fog-grilles just to compliment the new fresh look.... ....If you're going that 1st option route.

Re: Thinking out loud about painting my grills and potential options.

Well i pulled and painted the grilles yesterday. Tried to match the gray but i couldn't get it right so i stripped it, and just did all black. Car looks 10X better. I'm contemplating blacking out the rings seeing that i have the black rims and tint, but am unsure at this point.

I am gonna pull the rings off the trunk later today, and then next weekend when i have more time i am going to take care of the turn signals. I also have some smoked side markers coming this week that i will install next weekend as well. Props to Monchichi8 for posting pics and proving me w/ the DIY links.

    Obligatory pic.

BTW the fog light film was free and is definatley coming off..
