Lets talk serious fuel delivery mods (lines, tanks, etc)

Do you have a surge tank?
How much line was required to run a line from the tank to the rail?
which lines did you use? How much did it cost?
Are you still using the OEM fuel filter?

Re: Lets talk serious fuel delivery mods (lines, tanks, etc)

a surge tank seems much easier then upgrading the fuel lines all the way from the tank to the engine then back again, plus installing an upgraded pump inline with the stock pump. if two pumps are inline and either of them fail it puts a big strain on the second pump. i would think it would be best to separate them on two different circuits. plus that way the stock pump just has to circulate the fuel, there would be very little pressure in the stock fuel lines that it has to pump against.

i threw together some ideas in CAD a few weeks ago about a surge tank that had a holder for a walbro intank pump (since i already have one of these, i would rather use that then have to buy another in-line pump), havnt had the motivation to take it any further yet. i designed coolant reservoirs for water cooled computers in the past, this is essentially the same thing, just different fluid.

i was also thinking about relocating the battery to the trunk and then putting the surge tank in its place. that way if there ever was a leak, it would be behind the second firewall and away from the engine, and you could utilize the drain under the battery tray so the fuel would just dump out underneath instead of pooling somewhere.

    Interesting idea...............

I am trying to evalulate whether a surge tank is really even needed for street driving and occasional drag racing.

I know of lots of track cars (lapping) that don't run surge tanks, seems way overkill to me. Mike doesn't run one either IIRC. Just grab the Bosch 044. If you are really worried call up Javad or Joe@Axis and ask them what they think.

I have been running an 044 pump for almost 2 years.............

I really wondering if I need to upgrade my lines....

So far I only know of 1 person that made over 500 wheel running stock lines + stock rail...

    Maybe one more.

Everyone else I can think of has upgraded lines & rail.

I have upgraded lines and rail as well, and thought you had done the rail already for some reason and the lines. I was under the impression you just wanted to do a surge tank.

You have -6an line from the fuel tank all the way up to the fuel rail?

No surge tank here. Just -6 feed line, 044 pump and upgraded fuel rail. When I reached the 500whp mark I noticed that my fuel pressure would always drop while running the car hard thru the gears, so thats when I upgraded to the -6 line and that issue went away.

The B6 guys are now upgrading to -6 fuel line because they get pressure drop when trying to make 400whp.

Javad runs a surge tank on his 80. IIRC he also runs 3 fuel pumps, 1 intank pump and 2 inlines after the surge tank. I think at that point the surge tank is needed to get enough fuel to dual inline pumps that are good for 1000-1500 hp. I looked into doing this on my car when I first started talking to Javad about upgrading the fuel system, but at the time it just meant more parts that might stop working and would cause the car to run lean while running WOT. At some point I am sure I will have to end up doing it anyway to push the car over the 700whp mark.

Re: Lets talk serious fuel delivery mods (lines, tanks, etc)

the setup on my car will be two 044 pumps....-10 from the tank to the two pumps--->then -8 out of both pumps to a distribution block--->-8 all the way up to the rail and from the rail to the fpr---->-6 from the fpr back to the tank. this IS NOT a b5/6 chasis though, so i lucked out a bit i guess. id try to explain...but ill just post pics cause its easier....

Mike, where does your -6 feed line start?

I can take a look today for you.

(added) just looked and it starts at the filter. It is rubber line from the tank/pump cover.

So, the fuel filter has a barbed fitting for the rubber hose from the tank and an AN fitting on the other end?

As for a surge tank, have you thought of any locations to mount it in your car? Maybe where the drier for the A/C system used to be?
Also, do you remember what pump Javad runs in-tank to feed the surge tank?

I guess if your not using a BT setup for something along those lines to make very serious power (in the +350whp range) there is really no need to upgrade the fuel system?

    Correct.....

If I had to throw a number out there I would say 475 AWHP + should start thinking about better lines, rails, etc.

However, an upgraded fuel pump is probably a good idea past 300 AWHP.

So let me get this straight.

The upgraded feed line starts at the exit from the fuel filter? (The line that connects to the rail?)

    Or

Upgraded line from fuel tank into fuel filter and upgraded line from fuel filter exit to feed line?

Re: Lets talk serious fuel delivery mods (lines, tanks, etc)

this is a link to javads setup...fuel system setup is about 1/2 way down the page...

    http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/view...asc&start=1400

as far as having an intank feeding those 044's underneath the car, im not sure if the he's got one of those to be honest, i could be wrong though. the older chasis cars like that had a metal fuel tank located up IN the trunk...like right behind the backrests of the backseat...and the stock fuel pump was just gravity fed from the tank (stock pump was located underneath the car pretty much were javad has his 044's)

once again, this doesnt really help any of you b5/6 guys...but its still a sweet fuel system setup.

Braided line from the filter outlet to the rail. The line from the pump cover to the filter is rubber. Since the pump cover is a set size you can only run a set size hose from there to the filter unless you cut the cover and put new fittings on there which is something I might look at doing later on since I dont plan on running a fuel cell for some time.
