    Strong fuel smell

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my poor car had to sit out in the freezing weather the last couple of days. We got snow here a couple of days ago. So yesterday and last night my S had to sit outside in the freezing (20s) temps. When I started it up around noon I first got freaked with the white smoke which turned out to be moisture in the exhaust. I let her warm up well, didn't diver here hard home and put her back to bed. I walked out 30 minutes ago to get something out of the car and the whole garage smells like fuel. I looked under the car and everywhere I can think of and not signs of a leak. The only think I can find is that the right side top of the engine smells like fuel. I can't see any fuel leaks and no oily liquids anywhere. What could be leaking that could cause that? Anyone ever have this happen? Any info would be great.

    Re: Strong fuel smell

did you check inside the engine bay? maybe something popped out after being frozen over.

    Re: Strong fuel smell

i cracked the main fuel supply hose under the hood one cold winter morning. it's one of the three hoses that are attached to the top of the factory airbox. Start your car and look for leaking/dripping fuel

    Re: Strong fuel smell

Thanks for all the inputs. I started the car back up after looking at everything and the smell didn't come back. I am going to take a look at the main fuel supply line. Not sure what this is all about. This is exactly why my car belongs in the garage at night.

    Re: Strong fuel smell

There was a guy on here that had worn o-rings on the injectors from cold weather a while back. You mentioned cold weather so that might be somthing to think about. Injectors are pretty easy to check anyways.

I also had a problem with the main fuel supply hose. It runs right over the passenger valve cover from the firewall. Cost is about $60 from dealer.

i got 6 new injectors from the dealer and the install was like 25 minutes.. really easy
hasn't leaked since but it warmed up here lately so it's hard to tell but i'm pretty sure i'm in the clear

    Re: Strong fuel smell

I searched the hell out of my engine and couldn't find anything. The weirdest thing is that it hasn't happened again since. I drove it to work today, nothing. The injectors seem to be dry, at least I don't see any leaks. Hopefully it was just a fluke since she had to sit out that one night.

also keep in mind that the fuel systems dumps a hella lot of fuel into the cylinders for cold starts

    Re: Strong fuel smell

I just wonder if I didn't have small leak injector leak. The whole garage smelled like fuel, but the again as soon as you get a small amount of fuel in a confined space it's noticable fast. Happens on our planes all the time. The temps over night where well bellow the 20s and it was right around 24 when I got home. Thank goodness we don't get that kid of weather here very much.

    Re: Strong fuel smell

Thats the spot, but mine was leaking from the hose crimp not being tight enough. I thought it was the flare fitting not seating and tried to tighten it, but it never would work. The more I looked at it I could tell the crimp was weak and would leak only during very cold temps.

I removed the whole line, cut the crimp with a cutoff wheel and used fuel injection hose clamps on the fitting in place of the crimp. Underneath the crimp pushed into the hose is a barb type fitting so the clamp works perfect. Cost like $5 for everything and a little time. Never had a problem since.

hold on .. go slow.. cause mine started leaking again...

you took the whole line off? and cut it? how'd you reattach the screwing nut head//// i doubt that's the right term.. but the larger nut...

    Re: Strong fuel smell

I removed the hose at both ends so I could clean it after cutting the crimp off. Under the crimp is hose, under the hose is a barb type fitting. Basically you replace the hose crimp with a fuel injection hose clamp. If your not good with fittings and what not just buy a new hose as they are not that expensive.

Mine was leaking in the exact same spot.

I used a worm drive clamp where the fitting meets the hose. Its supposed to be a temporary fix...but its held for over 10k.
