    New guy, question..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Whats goin on ladies/gentlemen, names Gary, I am from Knoxville, TN. I have been looking into purchasing an 07 Audi A4 S-Line 6 speed, coming from a Lexus IS300. I have already found some really good deals.

Only thing that worries me is reliability. I have heard so many horror stories about german cars, and Audi inparticular. I just love the styling of the Audis inside and out; the styling keeps me coming back. I maintain my cars, changing the oil regularly and do any required mileage maintenance - I just drive my cars A LOT. I put around 20,000 miles a year on my car - girlfriend lives about 30 minutes from me one way, racks up the miles. I also go to Florida about twice a year (1,200 miles round trip). I am looking at getting a low mileage Audi, around <30,000 miles. I don't drive the car hard (most of the time) and like I said, I keep my cars maintained, how do you think the car will treat me? I don't plan on modding this car besides getting an intake and tint.

Sorry, I know questions like this must pop up all the time, I just know this is the best place to get the best answer. Great community you guys got here, glad to be aboard!

    Thanks a lot,
    Gary

    Re: New guy, question..

Well in all honesty I just bought my b7 like 3 weeks ago and I've had no problems at all.

On the other hand, my good friend has had Audi's since he was 17. From what I can tell you the Audi will hold up pretty well (comming from him). Good luck on whatever you decide!

Oh and I came from an IS300 aswell. Are you on My.IS?

The horror stories are long gone bud. Audi is making a name for itself right now and it's not just from fancy advertising. Welcome to the family!

I've had my car for 30k miles now and it's only been to the shop for the regular interval checkups. I've had no problems at all aside from the tires being out of round when I go the car. Audi replaced them around 5k miles. Since then...Smooooooth sailing.

Consumer reports give the A4 a good reliability rating. However, I've heard of people having trouble starting the car in the cold.

I saw one of your threads on there about Carmax. You still getting another IS? I bought my IS300 from carmax, and take it from me, if you need ANY repairs done go straight to Lexus. Carmax will give you the run around. It took me a month to get a new CD player out of carmax. They said I was trying to play burned CD's and thats why it wouldn't work, they tried repairing my old one and when the repair guy took it out he scraped up the interior with a screwdriver, took a week to get the interior fixed - they said it was too hot to dye the interior the first time I went up there. Finally they just ordered me a new one.

Edit: I just saw in your signature you have a B7 A4, nevermind!

Thanks for the info - where did you see these reports? Not that I don't believe you, I would just like to read what they said.

Luckily it doesn't get too cold here either :) Only reason why I have been debating between the A4 or BMW 330i; I don't really NEED the AWD, it would just be really nice to have if I ever did.

I bought a subscription when I was looking at cars. It has since expired. If you don't have a subscription, I'm not really sure how you find that. You could go get the magazine...

Yeah, Gary, nice to meet you too Nick. I come down to St. Augustine at least once a year - how far is that from you? Maybe if I get the Audi we can meet up.

I have another question - what kind of warranties does Audi offer on an A4? What factory warranty does it come with? What kind of extended warranties do they offer and what are the prices of them?

    Re: New guy, question..

Most of the reliability issues of the A4 have been worked by the B7. The B5 and B6 definitely had their share of issues but Audi has come along way since then. You probably won't have too many problems (if any at all) coming into a low mileage 07 A4 as long as you know how to treat a car right (which it sounds like you do). Personally, I've had my A4 for a little over a year and have yet to have any problems, As a matter of fact, the only times I've been to the dealership is for it's scheduled maintenances.

Also, just an FYI, Intakes don't do a whole lot for our cars performance wise, most would opt for a chip (~$500) which adds about 50 bhp and around 85 lb-ft of torque without compromising reliability.

Anyways, welcome to AZ and good luck in your search for the perfect car! ( hopefully the A4)

St. aug is like 4 hours from me (roughly). I'm down whenever. Just hit me a PM whenever you are planning on comming down.

O/T: I bought my Audi certified pre-owned (audi champion FTW!!). So basically i get another 4 years or up to 100k miles. ;)))

Take good care of it and it will be fine. There are some trademark problems, but they have all been taken care of on here.. and should be in the common problems/how to fix them thread.

Good luck on your purchase :D

    Re: New guy, question..

I bought an 06 with ~30k on it, and have had no issues what-so-ever. The dealer replaced one coilpack before I took delivery, but I myself have had nothing but fun in this car. Most of the nightmare issues you've heard about Audi's are worked out by the time you get into a B6/B7 and the remaining issues almost always have to do with negligence or extreme weather.

Buy with confidence :) Just make sure you research all of the options ahead of time.. I'm still kicking myself for not buying S-line. That is.. until I go DTM :o

    Re: New guy, question..

    Hey,

I'm also from an IS300, well i still have it, but it's going up for sale once it's fully parted out.

The audi is definitely lots of fun, but its also slower stock than the is300. The audi has a quieter cabin, handles much better in the rain/snow, and in my opinion, looks much better. feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

oh, and an intake really won't do much for your car (unlike the is300). you're better off getting coilovers or an exhaust.

Thanks a lot guys.. a lot of good feedback - what I wanted to hear. Glad they have worked most of the major issues out by now. After looking at the styling of the A4 its hard to think about getting the BMW or another Lexus.

So chipping the car doesn't hurt reliability? What about warranty?

    Thanks again..

Funny, I'm looking to get an IS 300 as a daily driver within the next year. Lots of good info. on my.is. I've had my B7 for almost 2 yrs. now and it's pretty heavily modified. The only issue I've had is a blown diverter valve and PCV, very typical for the 2.0T engine. I do maintain the crap out of it, though. I see you intend to as well, so you shouldn't have too many issues.

Chipping the car is prolly the best mod out there that is worth the $$.
It does void the warrenty but most dealers really don't care. Just depends on who you go to.

When i want to get mine chipped. I'm gunna take it to Champion Motorsports and have them do it (they will allow it under warrenty with them).

Actually, I plan on taking my car their whenever I need work done. (exhaust/suspension/BT/etc)

    Re: New guy, question..

In a few weeks, I will have had my 2006 A4 for 1 year (god, how time flies!). I got it CPO with 21k miles, and it has a hair over 33k now, and it has yet to even have a warning/check engine/bulb out/anything light come on at all. **knocks on wood** I just lowered it, and will be chipping it next, and I have to say it is an amazing car to own and drive.

Other than a few known issues like coilpacks and DV's going bad, the cars are totally solid. The two things I just mentioned are also very cheap fixes, and at that point will compare with the costs of replacing brands/makes from Japan and such which may have cheaper maintenance reputations.

    I say go Audi!

The chip puts very little stress on the other parts of the engine (for the most part) so It really doesn't affect reliability very much. However saying that, you may want to look into getting a forge dv(~$200) as our stock diverter valve is very susceptible to giving out once you are chipped and is a notoriously weak part.

As for warranty, most dealerships will void your warranty if they find out you're chipped, but it is very easy to "hide" the chip from them. All the chipping companies offer a "stock" mode which allows you to turn your car back to it's stock settings when you take it into the dealership and for the most part, the dealership won't be able to tell whether you are chipped or not.
