    Subwoofers?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Heya! So I have a 1996 Quattro and in need of some advice. I am planning on putting a Single 10 inch sub (Alpine Type-R) in my trunk and it is powered by 600w Alpine mono Amp, this is where I hit my problem however. What enclosure would work best with the car and the trunk? Ported, Sealed I have no idea! So I am thinking, why not ask the guy's who know everything.

    Re: Subwoofers?

ported for more sound, sealed for more quality. 2 or 4 ohm? did you already buy that set up? if i were you I would get at least a 12

    Re: Subwoofers?

depends on waht you want. ported will be louder but the response wont be as quick. sealed will have quick response but wont be as loud and may not hit some super low notes

    Re: Subwoofers?

It is a 2-0hm sub, and yeah I already bought it, the deal was to good to pass up. Anyways that is what I am also debating, what would sound better. I am new to the sound system game and there are so many variables I don't know where to start. I originally was thinking Ported, but then found out it would be all bang and not that much quality, but then how much quality could be in a boom?

    Re: Subwoofers?

Yeah, I will be mainly listening to Rock and Techno with some rap on the side, I like your set up by the way, it is really clean. How would I start Building my own set up? I hear all of this stuff about not having enough airspace within the enclosure to produce enough bass, and then I hear about having to much. So I am just trying to get a clear answer you know? Thanks so much for the help.

read the little book that came with the sub. it has the min and max air space and how much the speaker itself displaces. then build a box to fit the needed airspace. i think mine ended up being .85 cu ft each, which was almost the min, next time i would go a little bigger

    Re: Subwoofers?

i prefer sealed, not as loud or as big of an enclosure, but definitely a tighter quicker response. I have a IXL 10" running off 350 watts and it sounds great inside the car. cant really hear the bass outside which is what i wanted

    Re: Subwoofers?

sealed are not as loud but are still pretty loud. if you want to be the civic guy with the subs heard across the town then you can get a ported box but its just gonna rattle alot and if you live in a populated area with alot of theft thats like telling all the thieves hey come break into my car and steal my subs. i prefer sealed boxes

i prefer sealed as well but if i turn mine up it can be heard plenty outside the car. i think if the box is done well a sealed enclosure will be close to eing as loud as a ported and will be much quicker and cleaner

i have one 12" alpine type r and it pounds. go ported, the response with a 12 will be good no matter what with a decent speaker, were not talking a 15" sub

    Re: Subwoofers?

for what you are listening to go sealed. Both rock and most techno/electro have tighter bass. With only 1 10 the system isn't going to be super loud either way so the sealed, like everyone has said and i will say again, is going to give you a better sound quality.

    Re: Subwoofers?

I almost always use a sealed box for a 10". 12" is another story, but the 10" I've always been happy with sealed. Great response time.

If you're a ghetto, thuggin, rap kinda person, go get a 12"(or pair).
Everything else sounds great with a single 10"

+1. I have a 10" and its definitely loud enough. No need for a 12 or multiple subs IMO.

    Re: Subwoofers?

just get one 10, you can fab it to the corner of the trunk. anywhere between .8 to 1 cubic foot by volume.

since you listen to techno, you will appreciate sealed box better. go with sealed

pick up some 3/4 MDF, you can actually get away with 1/2MDF, some carpet liquid nails, silicone, screws and jig saw

should not cost you more than $35.00

    Re: Subwoofers?

I had sealed and they sounded great. I listened to outkast and other artists like them who liked a lot of bass. how powerful are the subs though, i had two 600 rms subs so I had plenty of boom and a sealed box worked great to keep the bass accurate. If they dont have much power you might want ported to get them louder.

    Re: Subwoofers?

The biggest thing i noticed after i got my JL was that it hits harder and sounds a bit louder if you fold the seat behind the driver down. Most subs are rear-firing design so they sound best if bounced off the back of the trunk then towards the cabin of the car which is probly why it sounds better with the seat down for me, but every set up is different so i'd say try it out and see what works best.

You can always throw the seat up if needed so its nothin permanent

My setup is a JL 12" W6v2 in a really skinny sealed box designed by JL. And it pounds. Its been enough for me since I put it in over a year ago

    Alpine amps ftw

And i know the ropes are ugly but do work on holding it down, the ish is heavy

Hey i got 1 10" inch Alpine Type X in a sealed box running almost 1000 watts. I was thinking about dumping it to get a ported box cuz it still just wasn't enough for me. However i took the cheap route and just put down the single seat in the back and it does the trick great!

    Re: Subwoofers?

I gota 12' JL W3 (4ohm) in a ported box...2cft @ 32hz, so I get the lows like no ones business . The thing thumps for only running 375watts, sounds Great compared to most setups ive heard. Only bad part, on some rap and trance, it gives off a slower bass or will miss a note - which suckss. But its only once in a while that will happen, due to certain songs with quicker or weird bass lines.
As for your 10', just got sealed, its not meant to be loud or shake the block from 9 houses down...
