What do you guys make of this?

Apparently my car hates me. Regardless, every intake port is the exact same. The 2 "end" valves are oiled up and the "middle valve is mostly clean.

mhh... I guess you guys don't see all the oil? Especially in the first pic it is clear what I mean by the 2 end valves are covered bu the middle is clean. BTW these valves have UNDER 1,000 miles on them. And my car is burning oil...

were the valve seals replaced and the valve to guide clearances checked? Due to design the 5th valve won't have as much oil leakage, but some carbon buildup on the back of the valves is normal. Yes, what's on there is too much for the mileage.

How much oil are you burning? Does it smoke on cold start up? 1000miles on the head, or full rebuild?

Re: What do you guys make of this?

1,000 on the head. The block has a bit more mileage. The head is an AEB head. All new seals were put in, I had him check the valve guides and said to replace what was needed and he said they were all good.

It is not burning a ton of oil, BUT it is smoking crazy. On a COLD start it will be okay, once the car warms up some it starts to smoke pretty bad, and if i give it gas the smoke gets twice as bad.

Looks like the valve guides or seals are not installed correctly.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

At first I thought it was from burning oil from the the turbo seals. But its odd that the middle valve is clean. The 1.8t heads natually have a lot of slop in the guides. More so on the exhaust size, but the oem spec is .8mm end play for both intake and exhaust. Usually super high mileage heads need new guides.

Does the car still smoke with the replaced k03?

Re: What do you guys make of this?

Yes, which is why I made this thread and pulled the intake manifold off. The car smokes like CRAZY, and it is definitely oil burning with the new turbo.

I thought at first it was oil form the turbo left over that built up, until the smoke was not going away. Then i pulled the and I saw the middle valve clean, and the fact that there is no oil going into the valve area, don't know what to call it but i guess the "bowl" area, is oil free. I mean it is either a guide or seal it would appear to me at this point. But for them to fail on EVERY valve except the 4 that are in the "middle" just seams odd?

when my gfs jetta has a pcv problem the car smoked bad for a good 40 minutes of driving. It eventually cleared up. Maybe give it some time and see if it changes.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

yeah, I was thinking about that. I mean my car is having such weird issues. Yesterday I drove the car for about 120 miles it smoked and burned oil for the first 20 minutes then NOTHING for about 70 miles of highway driving. I let it idle for 20 minutes and it started to burn oil (smelled it in the air although the smoke did not look to blue) again and smoked pretty good.

Then Today I started it up with the new turbo after seeing all the oil in my lines and decided my old turbo was gone and it did not smoke at all when first started. Once the car warmed up it started spewing smoke again. Driving me crazy. I mean my pcv is going to the ground so no oil going into intake.

edit: the car started smoking about 600 miles after the new head went on and basically has not stopped since(about 850-900 miles). I blew through A LOT of oil during that time which I believe was my turbo going.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

maybe its residual oil some where. if those valve seals are leaking, they are not leaking much at all.

What makes you say they are not leaking much at all? And where the hell is this oil coming from, looking into my cylinders through the spark plug with my light I see no obvious signs of oil and when I did a compression test there was no oil on the bottom of the part that threads in (I cleaned and checked it every cylinder) Intake mani was mostly dry besides some dirtyness and very minor oil residue that you had to wipe with a white glove to make sure was there.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

It seems like maybe you have too much oil in your crankcase. You burn oil when it's too full, and it'd probably get on those two valves and no the middle if the middle one is higher. possible?

Re: What do you guys make of this?

From the 1.8ts i've seen with very leaking valve seals there was a decent pool of oil accumulated on the back of the valve. The oil is definitely coming form the intake tract somewhere. You can tell from this pic cleary. Look at the oily film on the outside bowls. the middle one does not have that and that valve is clean.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

my theory is the intake manifold swirls the air to the outside which is why only the two outer valves are mucked up.

Re: What do you guys make of this?

i understand the oily film on the bowls, but the middle one NOT having that, isn't that odd? Or is that just how the air is designed to flow into the head?

At this point form what you've said I think the next logical thing to do is pull the fmic, clean it with gasoline or something since I am imagining there is oil in it and running seafoam through the intake system to get rid of all possible leftover oil in the intake system and go form there to see if it still goes through oil.

edit: I missed that last post and you were thinking the same thing i asked ha.

Good luck with everything, matt! Hope it's not as apocalyptic as you're worried about! I wish I could offer you assistance in the same way you've offered it to me - but i'm afraid I simply wouldn't be able to keep up with you enough to help! Maybe i'll just sit in with a camera and notepad one day. haha. We still have to find that boost leak and rattle! Good luck man - keep me updated!
