I think it will make the engine bay look nicer, but CAI performance gains are minimal and I can't justify paying $250...

I just never knew this intake was even an option...i guess AEM just fabricated this for our cars? Does anyone have this installed?

    Re: AEM intake - B7

My car was the test car for AEM. They claim 4.7hp and 8.7lb at the wheel. I have the intake in my possession, although I don't plan to install it. The intake will have gains for completely stock cars, or for those that are modified with supporting mods. My car is chipped, and will not be adding other supporting mods in the near future. Therefore, there is no realistic gain for me.

the intake looks very well made, and includes a powder coated metallic intake pipe much like what GSG sells.

you can see dyno graphs and pricing at NAMotorsports

and the one i have (brand new never installed) is up for sale here

you can make your own intake pipe for 60 bucks shipped, 35 bucks for a filter, and fabricate your own heat shield for not a whole lot of money.

    Re: AEM intake - B7

that dyno HP curve is so close to the stock curve (crosses several times) that the differences between runs likely had abosolutely nothing to do with the intake. however it looks like there is a slight gain in torque up until about 4000rpm.

I bet it sounds nice though. You could actually hear the turbo finally. If you were going to fab your own intake, what size piping and couplers would you need for the inlet, maf outlet and filter size?

It's AEM... :/ Id go with carbonio over this or even GSG's...this looks EXACTLY like the EVOMS just without the intake pipe...THats about the only thing I felt was quality, they stepped up and did the pipe with the intake...unlike others.

Could you please expand a little on your doubt of no realistic gain for a chipped car? As far as I know, freeing up intake airflow should always result in gains, and almost 9 lb.ft is in keeping with the norms of any CAI.

I intend to chip my car later this year and looking at the torque gains, it looks quite acceptable to me, and is in fact in the range that I normally drive.

Now the price is another matter -- i.e. whether or not ~5 hp and ~9 lb.ft are worth $250. Certainly not on the same bang-for-the-buck scale as the chip. I think that if our cars were not capable of such gains with simply an ECU reprogramming, more people might view CAIs more positively, since that would be one of the cheapest mods that adds power.

In all fairness, no one has bought this yet on the forums and the only person who has had it, is selling it. I am in no way, shape or form making fun of AEM, but in my books that says a lot.

So, we shouldnt jump to conclusion until some members buy it and test it out. It looks nice, though

i think it looks like a great buy for the price. The filter by itself is only like 17 bucks as well. However, the torque chart looks awfully 'bumpy' from 2100 to 4100 on both oem and with cai. shouldnt it be a straight line just under 200 lb/ft all the way through that point? maybe the car was running poorly?

Some of us chipped folks are running into fuel cuts with nothing but the chip. My car is fortunate enough not to have fuel cuts, but I don't think the car without other supporting mods would be making much HP. Of course, I could be wrong, but I have changed my driving habit and I rarely push the car now. I have no need for this intake, therefore I am selling it.

And in all fairness, very few people have this intake because it is so new. And the only reason that I am selling the intake is because it doesn't do anything for me at this point in my life. If anyone in socal wants to come and see it in person before he/she makes the decision to buy (whether from me or not), you are more than welcome to PM me and come check out the intake. I don't mind making new friends at all, especially fellow Audi enthusiasts.

it does sound nice. the diverter valve and the turbo are much louder. however, i just swapped the stock airbox back on before i went in for service on monday. the car is much quieter, but feels more responsive. i need to build a heat shield soon to balance all of that out.

i got a 3" aluminum intercooler pipe and i used a 3" to 2.5" reducer to fit the turbo inlet. the maf housing pipe is 3", but i would suggest maybe getting a 45 degree bent silicone pipe. to redirect the cone a little more downwards (allows for better fitment to stock airbox or a homemade heat shield. then i used t-bolt clamps to hold it all together. 60 bucks shipped

jmaak has a intake thread somewhere where i posted the pricing and everything from. i'll look it up and post the link.

FYI, for those people who don't want to wait for you stuff to be shipped and pay for shipping, Pep Boys has silicone couplings and reducers for 7 bucks. I think they're silicon, they might be rubber, but I'm not sure.
Also, I went to a diesel parts shop and picked up a 3" 90 degree mandrel pipe for 18 bucks.

he is probably selling it because its a mod that realistically has no gains or no realistic gain for him since he is chipped, like he said. intakes do little for our cars anyways. in his case, he makes 250 by selling a new intake and getting rid of a part that adds little to no power for him.

also its a new product that isn't heavily advertised. since when do you ever see AEM advertising products for audis? or even a distributer of AEM come in here to audizine and link their products? they are actually a very large company that works well with Japanese cars. i actually give AEM props for TRYING to venture into the Euro car scene instead of keeping it JDM. I know they have made VW intakes before, but this is one of the few audi parts i have seen from them.

the money being spent is for a cool sound and that is all. if power is what is being sought, you are better off getting an intercooler like a FMIC or upgraded DSMIC set up. that will generate better "cold air" into the engine by preventing heat soak.

Its nice to see so many DIY ppl on the forum. Its also very nice to see AEM made and intake for the B7. Why hate on there product when they put hard earn money and time trying to make your car better. I'm starting to see alot of honda trends on this board. Hey get the springs off ebay i got the header for 20 bucks. Each person mods there car with in a budget it just seems the A4 budget has been droping lately. Soon your market will be full of 60 dollar ebay parts that dont fit well. All the major companies have took a step back because of members giving them a hard time about products. Most i know of dont even want to make more products for the A4. Just something to think about, there is nothing wrong with doing a do it yourself. But when a member post a new product and all you hear is get it on ebay its cheaper it brings the level down just a bit.

why do you make food at home when you can shell out a bit of cash and go to a restaurant where there are trained chefs that do it much better than you?

and i don't know why you quoted me on this. i didn't mention anything about ebay, and i didn't say anything bad about the AEM intake. i'm not holding a gun to anyone's head here. if people don't want to bother putting together the parts, and building their own heat shield, then they have the choice to shell out the cash. But if people want to get their hands a little dirty, and have some fun modding their car, they have the option to save themselves a little bit of cash while accomplishing the same goal.

Glad to see people talking about this intake! For anyone interested, we are offering a free intake for someone local to us in Connecticut so people can see the quality of the AEM product. I know AEM isn't too well known in the Audi world, but their quality is excellent, they do unreal amounts of R&D and all their intake are made in the U.S.A. We are in the process of getting back on Audizine as a sponsor, hopefully for February!

pretty much like many other intakes out there...its a name brand sum prefer over others...i mean obviously even sum company like 1 i saw, gave away an intake so people found out the quality...I had a carbonio and seems besides the carbon fiber, its the same, same with evoms, and others...I rock the cai by GSG now..
I was the first to buy this carbon fiber grill, and now others since theyve seen it and the quality is there, plus no pics were up before on a car...now people want to order...
