Transmission, Driveshaft and Axle Special Tools

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What are the special "sockets" that I need to remove the drive shaft and axle bolts, and are there any other special tools that I will need to pull the tranny, or install the clutch? I have decided to install my own clutch, Ive done it on a few Honda's and Acura's, so I am willing to tackle this. Are there any tips you guys can recomend to make it easyer?

    Thanks

    Nice dude,

Ok for the axles, they call them "serrated" or "triple square"

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/XZN-T...ayphotohosting

thats the kit I use, not bad for $10. The B5 A4 axles are 8mm but ours are 10, and a 10mm also takes out our seats and flywheel, so that set comes in handy.

Now, for the driveshaft, I use a 6mm hex with a swivel socket and extension. Your best bet would be to get a ball-end 6mm hex

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCE...ayphotohosting

    Something like that....

Anyway, you need a 16mm wrench for the bellhousing bolts, make sure you get one with a curved closed end, so you can get to the bottom bolts on the pan

For the linkage, get either a SHORT 8mm hex socket with an 8mm racheting wrench, or an alen key 8mm and trim the edge a bit to give you clearance. Also, the 8mm alen key will help you for one of the bellhousing bolts

I think that should be about it , let me know if you have any other trouble, and good luck! Oh, btw just so you know, our transmissions weigh about 120lbs

For the driveshaft bolts I would actually reccomend an actual allen key and use like a 6" pipe for leverage. Therefore you can gaurantee not to strip any of the bolts with a swivel socket or some form of extension

touche.. although ball sockets allow a little extra angle without stripping

Re: Transmission, Driveshaft and Axle Special Tools

Awesome, just ordered the triple square bits, Ive got regular hex and the ball hex bits at home, and all the other tools then, I will be doing this in the garage on jack stands, so hopefully I can get the car high enough, and is a tranny jack necessary or will a normal one work to pull the transmission?

Many of us on here have dont it with just a regualar jack. Having two sets of hands is very helpful though.

Yeah I will have a second pair of hands, whats the average time to pull and install the tranny, the crappy thing is the car will be down for a while to get the flywheel resurfaced.

First time, Id give myself about 4 hours out 4 hours in. I can get B6 transmissions out in about 2 hours now, and getting it back in just depends on how quickly it slips into place. Its good that you have an extra set of hands, the minimum without an extra set it 2 jacks

Re: Transmission, Driveshaft and Axle Special Tools

I strongly recommend renting a proper transmission jack, it makes the process of removing and reinstalling the trans a lot easier. With a trans jack, the cradle can be tilted side to side, and the for/aft position is adjustable so that everything lines up properly without a struggle.

Even if you have help, once you do this job with a trans jack, you won't want to do it again without, it makes a major difference overall and helps insure nothing goes wrong, and minimizes the chance of injury to both yourself, and the car.

Having two floor jacks, to raise the car onto the jack stands is also preferred, allowing each end of the car to be jacked up evenly with a jack on each side to place the jack stands. In order to obtain enough height for clearance for using a trans jack, the jack stands
need to be set on risers using 2X4s cut 1' long and stacked up as needed. A hardwood cap between the 2X4 stack up and the jack stand feet, should be used to prevent the riser 2X4s from splitting from the jack stand feet, by the weight of the car. Do not use concrete blocks for risers, as they can possibly crumble unexpectedly without warning.

Replacing the rear crankshaft seal and the transmission input shaft seal is a good idea while the trans is removed.

thats what i was going to throw in. i tried a 1/2 drive allen socket but the rachet head kept it from sitting perfectly straight in and almost stripped it! used a allen socket with a breaker bar to let it sit straight in and give me plenty of leverage

pilot bearing puller tool. i rented one from autozone and had to grind the tips to make it fit hehe... i just repainted it flat black and they never knew! the pilot bearing doesnt want to sit straight in at first but just keep realigning it and trying to pound it in and it will eventually find its home..

get a set of triple square sockets. you only need a 10mm and 12mm for the axles and flywheel. i got a cheaper set and they were nearly stripping. if you are planning it, look on ebay and you can buy some nice quality snap ons for $10-15 each probably. you will need a basic but fairly complete set of wrenches, sockets and extensions. if you dont have that, dont bother.

other than that, just take your time. its not a crazy hard job. beer will ease the pain from busted knuckles and your abs and neck muscles will be sore as hell after the first day from laying up under that mofo trying to lean up and take shit off!

good luck , ill be glad to PM you my cell if you have any questions. i had to call sami during mine but he had a 5 speed and the six speed linkages are different from whats show in the DIY guides

you will feel sooooo proud once the tranny gets back up. it wont be but just few hours from there and you will be done!

    I concur.

While you can probably finagle that thing on with a regular floor jack a good transmission jack (or adapter for your floor jack) is the best way to go. Trust me, you don't want that transmission falling on your hand or yourself. I've done that before and it is not fun.

Safety first. Even if it requires buying new and the proper tools. It also makes the job a lot easier.

very good point doug. That tranny is HEAVY and not a even shape. it takes a tranny jack to hold it safely. i PMed you a few places you can pic one up for about $100 or less

this is why you need a swivel socket.

Anyway, John is right, Im sure a trans jack makes it easier, but its like having sex, before you do, its not a big deal because you dont know what your missing. Luckily, I havent used one yet so I dont care

You dont need a tranny jack, just a good bench press, well make that close grip bench press I personally bench press mine up into place half the time with a friend helping to hold the back and push/guide it into place. It's only 145lbs.

If the flywheel bolts don't have any locking / thread sealant pre applied, use LockTite "Blue" medium strength compound, including the special pre cleaner/primer spray applied first.
Besides thread locking, sealing the threads is required to prevent oil leaks from the bolts.

Yes, there is a puller for this, it's an attachment for a slide hammer, called a "blind hole" bushing/bearing puller/extracter. Check with a tool rental store for a slide hammer and the blind hole bearing puller together. The tool may be provided as a Pilot Bearing puller set.

The Pilot needle bearing needs to be packed with high temp grease, after installation into the flywheel.

Autozone can lend/rent you this tool.

You where lucky! Suprising the clutch worked OK for 1500 miles, without the trans imput shaft breaking or worse.
