running vagcom on a mac with parallels

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright, so I've downloaded parallels so now I can run XP on my mac. I downloaded vagcom 311.2 but I can't get it to work. All of the ports are inaccessible. I think i need to download a driver for the cable (ebay cable), but the CD that comes with it is one of those tiny discs, which I can't be put in macs due to the way discs are loaded, so i have no clue what's on that. What do I have to do to get it to work? I'm hoping someone on this forum managed to get vagcom running on a mac and could help me figure this out.

you need to get the drivers from the leopard disc, then it will work. You should have just done bootcamp for free

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

I don't have lepoard, I'm running tiger. I downloaded parallels for free, so it's not like I'm wasting money. I don't want to use bootcamp preferably because parallels can run XP and OSX simultaneously which would be easier instead of re-booting to get into windows (i'm lazy). but if it works with bootcamp, maybe it's time to upgrade to leopard....

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

I realize they run at the same time, my job is to work on computers. It has glitches and it has no many problems, I've used both extensively. And if you have tiger, you probably have a slower processor and that means parallels is going to lag.

I have a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. It didn't seem to get laggy, but then again I didn't get very far with it. Do you have any advice for what I should do with the parallels, or are you go leopard or go home

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

I like VMware Fusion much better than Parallels if you can pick up a copy of it. It seems to work much better with USB and other devices. Really though, if you have an Intel (which you do obviously to be able to run Parallels), I would just run Windows off of Bootcamp.

Ok, just read the thread, should have done that first. I would definitely upgrade to Leopard and then run Bootcamp. Yeah, it's a little bit of a pain to have to restart in Windows, but you can also use that same drive partition with Fusion or Parallels and so you don't always have to restart, just when you want optimum performance.

If you have those specs I'm surprised your computer didn't come with leopard. Its up to you though. And yes VMware fusion is also good.

Yeah, after you get bootcamp installed and set up the drive and install windows, all you have to do is run the vagcom setup while in windows, then plug in your vagcom to the USB port and the car.

The leopard install is cake, takes about two hours. The boot camp one is easy too but you need a copy of windows to put on it. It downloads all drivers from the leopard disc though.

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

UPDATE: I got it to work with some help from a friend. So you can use parallels to run it, not just bootcamp. I just needed to download the driver for it and then it was fine from there. Thanks for everyones help though

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

glad you got it to work, I might have to look into parallels or VMware, like you i'm too lazy to reboot in xp with bootcamp, unfortunately it takes under a min to do, (hints why my grandma gave me a pamphlet on adult adhd last week)
OT but in the spirit of the vag (insert pun here) i was fooling around behind the center console last week, saw the computer port diagram on the ashtray assembly, knew there was no port there but decided to explore, saw a clip and decided that it was what I was looking for knowing full well it was not, pulled it out (insert pun once more), turned out to be the parking brake sensor, now along with my cel, i now have BRAKE on my cluster... just when i think you can't get any dumber you go and do something like this.... and TOTALLY redeem yourself

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

    i use bootcamp.

fwiw, I have a 2.16 ghz intel macbook, and I could not get it to work with fusion. There was too much latency. I could access the program, and plug it into the car, but it was unable to retrieve fault codes etc.

I installed leapord just to get bootcamp (too bad I missed the beta for free)
anyways, bootcamp works fine, and its not too big of a pita to startup, hopefully you wont need to be vag coming the car too often!

Re: running vagcom on a mac with parallels

    FYI:

use can only use the newer version of parallels since the older ones (the one I have) does not recognize when you plug things in via USB

There is an app already part of your Leopard install called Bootcamp. Run that. It will walk you through it.

But basically it goes like this:

Run Bootcamp, and repartition your HD for a Windows. I'd recommend 40-50gb. Not much more cause whatever you use for windows you can't use for mac.

Then it asks for your XP or Vista install disk and it installs normally.

Then once you boot into Windows for the first time put in your Leopard disk and it installs all the appropriate drivers.

Now you have a dual boot machine.

For added coolness install the app rEFIt. This makes it so you can select which OS at boot up instead of having to select it in bootcamp every time.

For super added coolness, get VMware Fusion and you can run run your XP or Vista partition in a window within Leopard. I actually use this 90% of the time.

    Hope that helps.
