Which car would you buy??? A4 Vs S4

2005 S4 6speed auto, Quattro, Bose, Sport.. pretty much loaded. 58,000 miles..Grey/black interior...

I've recently owned a 2004 Audi a4 1.8T 6 speed manual and loved it.. I chipped it, put an exhaust on it etc.. was great.

The only thing that is holding me back with the S4 is that it's an Automatic, and the gas prices in talks of going back up.

What car would I have more fun with? More Practical? Both cars are 1 owners and are in great condition and the dealer is asking about the same price for both.. maybe a 1000 dollar difference in the S4.

I would look for an S4 that was a manual. There are plenty of them out there.

If I could go back and redo the decision, I would pick power. The A4 is a quick car, but nothing like a V8.

Do you like going to the pump, go with the s4. Personally, I love sleepers so get the a4 and mod the shyza out of it

Also, I drive an automatic and it's great because I love letting friends drive my car, especially when they don't know how to drive stick... including my wife.

I stopped modding years ago and got the S4, but a manual is a must IMHO, and the B7 is the better platform than the B6 just because of the 40:60 front back split Quattro.

But if you don't have time or patience to mod, then try to find a manual S4. Prices are dropping like mad (unfortunately for me, but good for you). You can find B7 S4s for less than 40k now, it's ridiculous.

Forget $40k, check out Craigslist and you can find them in the $29k ~ 33k range (B7 S4' s ) Crazy market out there if you have the cash / can secure financing.

I'd only ever by a CPO S4. You never know how much "fun" the previous owner had, and while CPO isn't foolproof, its slightly safer

That's a tough decision. I've felt some of the power that the 2.0T is capable of and once it's Stage III, it will own the S4. Not to mention, I've become a boost whore. I love it. Plus, you'll still get decent gas mileage, far more so than an S4. The transmission means surprisingly little to me these days. I guess because I'm getting a little older (more mature, not just age), I'm starting to come around to automatics. Modern auto's are just so damn quick, intelligent, and the Audi Tip isn't bad at all in S Mode. The new platform vs. the old platform is a plus on the A4 side too. I like the B7's Driver's display better than the B6's and the fact that little convenience factors like cup holders are better in the B7. Also, the B7's steering is the equivalent of the B6 S4's steering.

But there is definitely something to be said for V8 power and top end performance. Plus, depending on the package, the S4's seats are better and interior nicer. You would spend a fortune trying to get that in an A4. Also, the sound of a V8 with exhaust will just own the 2.0T with exhaust, no question. They're only a $1000 apart, and depending on mileage difference, it's a no-brainer decision in terms of bang for the buck. I actually like the B6 body style too. In the end, I would probably go A4, simply because I'm a guy who likes to mod.

To me, the transmission is the FIRST choice you should make before you consider any car. Decide upfront, manual, auto, DSG, ect. The result of that decision should govern which cars you go after.

The reason I say this is that I believe a sports car or sports sedan should be manual. If you don't want manual, what's the point of buying something performance oriented? If you want an auto why get an S4, why not get an A6. Bigger, nicer, ect. To me, the transmission determines your driving style and says a lot towards what is truely important to you.

I'm sure a ton of Auto drivers will tell us otherwise, saying they can have their cake and eat it too with a auto concerning a 'fun' ride...but face it that's a ton of crap. if they really wanted to go faster, be involved, and such they'd have a manual. But they still make S4s, M3s, ect with autos because a lot of people want the image and power of a performance car but still want only the 2 commuter car pedals.

I loved my S4. Don't get an automatic S4 though - zaps the power and fun. If you do alot of city stop-n-go driving, mileage is horrible 12-14mpg. On highway and 'continuous' type driving you can get 17-21.

But prices on S4's are dropping. I'd be lying if I didn't say I missed that V8 and exclusitivity factor. But in the end I need something more economical. If I could get the Recaro's in my car I would be really happy.

Go test drive an S4 if you haven't already.

Being as how you say you like to mod, you should be able to look at that A4 and see what can\should be. Mine was nothing but a bone-stock luxury package when I got it and now it's NOTHING like it was when i first saw it. I took it to the dealer a couple weeks ago and showed it to the sales guy who sold it to me and he commented endlessly about how it looks nothing like the car he sold me.

I've got a fully bolted on 4.2l S4. No f/i, no cams, no nitrous. Intake, Chip, Full exhaust and I get destroyed by a B7 A4 Stage 3.

At the initial go, my S4 will nudge a bumper and then its all over and rather embarrassing as the A4 flies away.

A4, because the 4.2 V8 is pathetically slow and heavy, doesn't take much to get a 2.0t / 1.8t faster.

Very logical guidelines to follow...well said! This is why I opted for an A4 2.0T 6spd Quattro for my daily traveling vehicle rather than another Mercedes.
