Timing Belt Change Intervals 1.8 and 3.0..

So I am calling around regarding that 04 b6 1.8 MTQ and apparently the TB service is at 90k!?!? I was confused when the service dept told me that, considering they said 70k for my 3.0... Is that b/c of the different engines? I was told they are all the same replacement interval.. What time did you replace (if you have) your TB and what engine do u have..

Re: Timing Belt Change Intervals 1.8 and 3.0..

for piece of mind 65-70k is a good range to replace the TB and associated parts. I did mine a little after 60k. my co-worker with a 3.0l is doing his next month at ~65k.

the timing belt change intervals have changed a little over the years. thus many of us change them early just so we don't have to worry about them.

I changed mine at 80K and the belt and tensioner looked fine. However my water pump had begun to leak around the front seal. More often than not the mode of failure originates from the water pump or belt tensioner rather than the belt itself. Either way the end results are catastrophic on a 1.8T. I would recommend 70K if you are a conservative and no more than 90K if you like to push the limits.

they now say that ,could change the belt later just to bring the average maint cost down, same as all of their "life time" fluid. that's just a advertisement strategy

Anyone know of any places in the VA/DC area that can do a good TB/WP job for a decent price? BC I am not trying to get raped at the stealership like some horror stories i've heard of ($2500).

not a joke lol, true story...this was posted in the B6 A4 forum by living legend

Check out the full story for yourself...he basically got raped when he took his A4 in for the 75k service.

I am past due for my service so in order to avoid getting raped too I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in the VA/DC area because I heard the Timing belt and water pump need to be replaced around 70-80k.
