ECL due to Timing Belt kit?

While driving back to home from Los Angeles, suddenly Engine Check Light came up from nowhere. I pulled her over and checked a couple of things, but nothing abnormal was found to my sight. If Timing belt or Tensioner was worn out, Does ECL appear on the trip board to warn?

Lately, I thought of replacing timing belt kit including Tensioner(it makes a metallic sound from the front end according to the dealership). SA said those are cracked and worn too much so that they must be changed immediately. I know the dealership often exxagerate things to scare customers, so I declined. She has 77,000 miles.

    Any help will be appreciated.

timing belt and all related tentionners and water pump should be changed when due, yours would be due (in my books anyway), so do not play around, it is like engine russian roulette, if it goes so deos alot of engine internals. You will get no warning signs, no lights, just silence once the engine implodes!

    Good luck!

intersting. first off, you won't get any lights as stated above. the thing that interests me is the "metallic" sound your engine makes. Is it only at start up or does it continuously make the sound? Sounds like something is just loose or there is metal to metal rubbing (example: heat shield to firewall)

At the very first of start up, it doesn't sound, but it starts to appear in about a minute. Definitely not from the engine, but somewhere around front end. SA said it's because of tensioner. What do you think?

Do it ASAP, granted you have to pay alot to get it done, but not near as much if it fails.
