What about using the cable for simple things like seat belt chimes headlight, sidemarker and region specific settings? There was alot of confusion about this when the B7 first came out and follks were adamant that all B7's use CAN-BUS and a $20 cable wouldn't work.
As it turns out the $20 cable worked fine for many things since some of the modules do not require the CAN-bus and therefore didn't require the full blown HEX-CAN cable. More complex features like data logging and diagnostics did require the full blown HEX-CAN cable though.

The B7 only required a CAN connection for the engine because lets be honest the B7 is really a B6 with an upgrade engine hence accessing the engine module required CAN but the rest of the cars electronics didn't.
With the B8, its a whole new ball game. like the A3s which now used long coding for every controller in the car, the same is for the B8.
Whats worse about the B8 is there is no information about what the coding options are but the basic mods have been figured out.
